Have the rules changed on who can post?

At one time non paying members could post replies but not post a new message.

It appears that only paying members are on the boards now.

I think the rules changed a week or two ago when we kept getting invaded by an unwelcome guest. He used some of the most disgusting language this site has ever seen. It even made Chick blush.
He kept joining as a free member under new names - I'm assuming he was getting axed, but kept coming back. It's a shame that one jerk can ruin it for thousands of really nice folks.

Yes, the privilege of posting to these forums has reverted to the paid-members-only status.

You can be assured that whatever this unwelcome non paying member posted has been deleted and rightfully so.
However having been PLAT since joining (when GOLD would have sufficed) to support this site, I have asked on a few occasions via support tickets to have a strong derogatory post against me removed but have been refused. All flame wars related to last years Presidental race have been deleted, so there is no reason why the editors have refused to honor the rules such as you shall not post:

Defamatory or abusive statements;

Statements which are insulting, bigoted, hateful, racially offensive, disrespectful of any ethnic group, any religion or religious group, disrespectful of any nationality, nation, or region of origin, disrespectful of any gender or sexual orientation, or which endorse or advocate illegal or immoral activity;

Statements or material which harasses, stalks, threatens or otherwise violates the legal rights (such as rights of privacy and publicity) of others;

The topic was not related to said political race but was around that time frame.

Hopefully the editors will reconsider.

I like it better this way. I only one of that guy's posts and it was truly nasty. I remember a time when only paying members could send PM's as well.

I for the sake of quiz authors would like to see the public comments featured removed-no longer write quizzes but think it is just an opportunity for those who like to be nasty to do that. Clueless as to why the "for author's eyes only" was ever removed...

I think that is an elitist statement. I think the editors should just keep up on posts and consider whether to delete. Not just pre-empt non-paying members. Just my opinion but with the recession some people just don't have it in their budget. I know I wasn't always a paying member. Now I am so I feel that my opinion can be posted if not inflammatory. But I have seen more and more personal flaming on the Salty Dog posts. Posts that are not healthy for the site, and could turn newcomers off. People that maybe would become paying members are turned off by all the controversy.

Was there ever a time when you could post once you got to level two, or had been a member for a month?
Either of those might short-circuit the bomber tactic?

What does that have to do with who can post?

The reason it was originally only paying members who could post had to do with encouraging non-paying members to pony up if they wanted full privileges. By paying for their membership, it would result in better manners in the threads. Nobody who actually pays for membership wants their account deleted repeatedly. So they behave better. Those with nothing to lose will post obscene comments repeatedly. If their account gets pulled, they don't care. They will just create another.

I agree with you, Linda, on the quizzes and thought I remember Justin say he was going to fix this. I remember taking quizzes and leaving comments that I thought would only go to the author, but everyone could see. And those comments usually contained answers to the questions. Like "Your question number 4 regarding XXX is incorrect. You have XXX as the answer and the correct answer should be XXX." A lot of people now will go send a private message, separate from the quiz, for those kinds of things. The trouble with that, however, is that once the quiz starts and ends, you don't know whose quiz you just took because the author name is missing.
