I just got the latest update from my father re: my mother's condition, and she has tested positive for the swine flu. While my mother's condition is improving, painfully slowly, but improving nonetheless, my father, brother, sister in law, niece and nephew have all been exposed. So far none have shown symptoms, but it will be another 48 hours or so before they know they are in the clear. God I wish I were able to travel. I want nothing more than to be by my mothers side right now. Sorry to burden you all yet again. I do try so to keep my posts positive on the forums, but that is proving difficult at the moment.

I'm so sorry to hear this news, Alison. Your mother has been in my prayers, and will continue to be, as well as the rest of your family. Hang in there and keep your thoughts positive.

Sorry to hear the diagnosis, but the good thing, she is improving. Now let's hope that the others either have immunity or have a lighter case if they get it. Please keep us posted.

I'm very sorry to hear this, Alison, but at least your mom is improving, however slowly. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Alison, that is really troubling news, I'm so sorry. What is heartening is that I have read repeatedly that this strain of the H1N1 virus that has spread to the US is much weaker than the regular flu that we have here every year. That is to say that most folks do not get as sick, and bounce back much faster. I pray that your dear family will do just that! Wishing them all, and you, wellness, Emily

Thank you all so much for your prayers, positive thoughts and kind words.

The doctors have been assuring my father that this strain of the swine flu isn't all that different from a normal flu. I think the only reason my mother got as sick as she did is that she's been running herself ragged. She's been putting in ten to twelve hour days marketing and doing community outreach for her hospice and had made a trip to DC just a week and a half prior to flying out to visit my brother and his family. On top of that she was invited to speak in Washington about health care reform while she was visiting my brother, and had to make another quick trip to Washington for a couple of days, and then fly right back to Wisconsin. Sometimes my mother needs a little sign from the Universe to slow down a bit. I just wish the Universe hadn't been quite so extreme this time. As for the rest of my family, they are fit and healthy, so if they are carrying the virus, they shouldn't be hit nearly as hard as my mother and can expect a much shorter recouperation period. I know my mother will get better in time, I just wish this process weren't so painfully slow. As my father said the other day, "I feel like telling this flu, you know you're going to lose in the end, so why don't you just wave your white flag and surrender now?"

Once again thank you all for your supoort. Hugs to everyone.
