Horribly, Susan Boyle apparently had a mental collapse on the set of Britian's Got Talent after the show ended. She voluntarily entered a mental health clinic later and is being treated by her personal doctor. She is exhausted and will reportedly take some time off.

I have been horrified at the cruelty that she has endured. Imagine, coming from a very small town and then overnight becoming a GLOBAL sensation. Her debut perfomance has now been downloaded from YouTube 200 MILLION times and counting -- a YouTube record that won't soon be surpassed! It was obvious from the outset that she didn't have the experience or sophistication to understand that every aspect of her professional and personal life suddenly became fare game for anyone and everyone who wanted a story, or a glimpse of the somewhat reclusive woman. Not only news hounds were on her trail for tidbits to tear her down, but out-of-control fans even found her home and beseiged her for autographs.

Hers is certainly a cautionary tale about fame: our perverse societies love to build someone up to mythic status and beyond then work relentlessly to find chinks in their armor, tear them down then revel with apparent glee when the deified is found to be a human being -- just like the rest of us. Poor Susan's fall from the public's grace can truly be heard around the earth.

I pray that she has a speedy recovery, and has a chance to resume her now skyrocketting career out of the direct glare of the media spotlight. I will always be a fan.

I have attached two links, a news report and a wonderful commentary about how horrors of celebrity entitled, "The Fame Dragon Feeds on Human Sacrifice." Both articles are from today's London Times.
