HOW DO YOU SOLVE A WORD PUZZLE IN 7 MOVES?????????

To me it seems impossible. 5 puzzles in each word puzzle and that would be 5 guesses per puzzle with 2 left over. How the heck do you do that????? Is the person a psychic?

There have been scores of 5 in the past, but the answers were so obvious, or google-able. This was much more complex, and for someone to get it all with just 2 letters exposed in that short a time is baffling.

Some people are just very good at visualizing what might fit. They put in one letter to see if it fits their idea. People who use fewer letters usually take a longer time as they think about each puzzle and try out different concepts. If the clue is Googleable, they may do research on the Internet to find the answers.

Once in a while I'm able to get one puzzle without any letters or maybe only one, but I usually make up for it in another puzzle.

So it IS possible.

If you crack the theme in a puzzle of eg two songs put together and can work out the artists, google their list and find one of the right length...Bob's your uncle!

Agree with Barry - I'm mad at myself for the theme not dawning on me until the last two puzzles - should have had a lot less moves last night which could have put me down around 7 or 8 also. Perhaps watching hockey and trying to do the WP at the same time wasn't a good idea.

Why would anyone want to google a word puzzle? Why spoil a puzzle this way, and also is why isn't googling considered cheating?

I play strictly for time, which doesn't allow for googling.

Why isn't googling considered cheating, you ask? How would it possibly be enforced? How do you differentiate between those who sit and stare at a WP until they decipher all the word combinations in as few moves as possible, and those who google? You can't.

As was mentioned in the thread someone started about tournaments, it could be resolved by a scoring formula that took into account both moves and time.

Occasionally I can figure out one puzzle out of five so that every word fits. Then when I type in my guess, I get the red screen because I've used a word that fits and makes sense, but isn't the word the author used. Earlier in the week that happened twice and I finished 11th. Oh well, I'm happy to crack the top 20.

They're just gifted IMO.

Make that six with Lamizell.

You and I are in the second group. We two are always jogging for position, but with me missing yesterday's puzzle waiting for a reset, I'll just hope to climb back into the top 10 again.

Some people cheat at solitaire. What's the point of that? Sad.

I feel lucky if I just finish with my 5000 points intact. I seldom google, just do the etaoin shrdlu till I can make a guess, and try not to type too fast.

Interesting thread!

I just hope that we aren't confusing our accuations about cheaters (multiple-account folks) with complaints about Googling. Cheating is a bad, bad thing, but if you include Googling, then I'm afraid you've damned most of the Word Puzzle participants and ALL of the elite group identified by Collioure.

I have the highest respect for those who "play for time," and get nice scores. But isn't the game's goal to finish in the least number of moves? Whether I Google, stare dumbly at my screen for long periods of time, scribble on a note pad, or double-double-double check my typing, I'm still following the game's stated rules and doing what I need to do to accomplish the goal of minimizing my moves.

Daveguth: In order to be in the running for anything, you have to play for moves. I quit caring a long time ago what my score was and unlike the other folks who play for moves, I simply don't have the time to work on a WP for 20 minutes or with a buddy like others do. I think my need for speed just came from having to get my WP done in the shortest amount of time I could so I could get back to work, or to dinner, or get ready for work, or whatever I'm delaying to slam in a WP.

I'm wondering if there is a way to split the WP board in 2. One for those who like the speed aspect & one for turtles like me. Each member would sign up for which ever was there preference & that's how every WP would be scored. The WP would be the same for both groups. I truly admire those like Ken/Kaufman & Lodi, that can whip them off at tremendous speed but its not for me. Between my slow mind & slow & bad typing I'd be down at the bottom of the boards every puzzle if there was a time penalty. I know Justin has bigger fish to fry at the moment but perhaps in the future it might be doable. Perhaps someone with computer expertise could chime in with whether or not that could be programed? I'm looking for peace in the valley or at least on the island & if we can't have that would Katie/Koota please open the Tiki Bar

BTW, if Donna/Smoke did every WP I'd be out of the top 5 & I'm sure there's a few others I've forgotten too, I might not even make the top 10

Illiamy always has a nice combination of moves and speed. I, too, wish there was a different formula. I'm sure that most of the folks that take their time now would still be near the top.

I like being stretched -- Slicko, Smoke, Daveguth raise the bar for us. No question, points do count, but so do the non-measurables. I'd prefer to be 'integrated'

I don't play for points - I play to try to beat Slicko and Garrybl. I manage it about once/week, and feel golden for the day. It takes so little.... Impossible to beat Virtus. Have stopped trying.

My big problem is that my fingers sometimes don't type what is in my brain, and my eyes are in kahoots with my fingers, so they don't see that I've left out a letter...

Got 2 sorry screens on the Asteroid belt puzzle. Coulda been a contenda.

Don't personally consider it cheating, but hubbie and I play together. He is really good at letter patterns and I am good at filling in the words in the middle. Between the two of us we make a remarkable team.

We never play under his name (at least until tonight, when we did by accident but then made sure that we had the same amount of letters when we played it under me).

We often get in the top ten and often get WPs with very few letter because hubbie will stare at a puzzle forever, until I say "I'm bored, pick something".

All in all we play pretty well together.

Without cheating

I'm sorry, Bbear, but I do think that's cheating. I don't know what the official Sploofus opinion is, but you and your partner are knocking people out of the top ten who have played it according to the rules. Nothing personal, just honest opinion on my part.

Oops, accidently transmitted too early.

Anyway continuing my point--I just want to say to Beth, that she should just ignore Rjenson's message and continue to enjoy playing the WPs with her husband. I certainly don't think it's cheating, and have absolutely no gripe when you finish in front of me and drive me down in the standings. (Well, no more than when some other player does the same thing to me!)

Sorry - I agree with RJ. I think that two players per screen gives an unfair advantage. Perhaps the couple could have a fun competition against each other while doing their puzzles individually. I ordinarily wouldn't care about this sort of thing but I know a lot of players here are serious about their WPs!! Just sayin!

Me - I could ditch a puzzle midstream for any number of reasons and move on with my day. Nonetheless....

I love WPs but it takes me forever. I will never be fast enough to compete in the WR/WMs, but I do them regularly to get some points. Sometimes I get lucky and figure out the puzzle theme on the first phrase. Then again sometimes I see the SORRY screen because I try to outguess the author and my word is wrong, or I just can't type. Actually I have done a puzzle in 5 moves. Lots of factors come into play. My hint---think like the author.

Old Cougar ... I liked your idea to open the Tiki Bar. Look for us this weekend. The special will be mollusks, of course!

Regarding the WP: I'm a Wheel of Fortune purist. I try not to use vowels at all unless I'm stumped and have to "buy a vowel".

I frequently type in the words that have been left out of the puzzle for unknown reasons. I have fat fingers and apparently can't spell.

For all of these reasons, I never make it into the Top 10. *sigh*

But, I do have a good time.

If I understand correctly, I think Bbear and her hubby usually play the word puzzle together in Bbears account. I don't think that Haydn would play on his account after that. That WOULD be cheating.
But I think what she was saying was, that when they realized they were in Haydn's account, they redid the puzzle in her account with the same number of moves, just to keep her place on the leaderboard. I don't really see anything wrong with that, but that's just me.

Always a bridesmaid.

OK, could I slide this past the editors? I make another account. I go through the WP, all the way to number 5, but instead of hitting submit, I trash the WP so that score doesn't show up. Then I go do my WP on my account. Would the editors know?

When you take a WP, your 5 phrases are randomely taken out of a pool of 10 phrases. People with two accounts would be lucky to have twice the same set of 5 phrases. People with two accounts just for the WP should get medical help, what is the point? Cheers
