I FIND IT DISHEARTENING...

That the same person will consistently give your quizzes low ratings. Doesn't matter what the topic or format, they rate it low. I'm talking about ratings of 5 or less. Why do they keep taking them if they don't like them? I realize that people put different values on things, but sheesh quit taking them if they are so terrible. The one person I speak of hasn't even written a quiz! Perhaps one should have to actually write a quiz before they can rate one.

That's my whine for today...I feel better now.

Abby

Some people are just jerks. Just be grateful you only have to deal with them here. Imagine the poor people who have to deal with them on a daily basis.

Abbyr.
In sploofus one and possibly in 2.0 as well (I do not know but an editor may read this and comment) anyone with a rating consistently below 4 or 5 was labeled a bomber and their rating a quiz was ignored in the general calculation.

So if there is someone out there doing it all the time it wont be for long!

Don't worry about sick individuals. I'm sure their rating is probably a reflection of just how bad they really feel about themselves.

You'll get those ratings from time to time. Not much you can do about it. You'll find that most of those who give the lowest scores usually have not written a quiz or anything else for that matter.

Don't know who you are speaking of, but we also get quite a few school kids joining during the summer months and they either don't understand the scoring system or think they are being clever. "This too shall pass."

I just don't look at the ratings. Ignore 'em.

When you look at the choices, a #5 is listed as "Decent." If someone says that I'm a decent fellow, I'm OK, but when I get a #5, I'm insulted.

I probably give more 9s than any other score. If there are small spelling or grammar errors, or if the quiz is a "throw-away" quiz (Fun quiz produced with minimal effort, little education value), an 8.

It takes a serious flaw to get less than a 7 from me. Usually has to contain factual misinformation in two or more questions.

So I'm like most authors with a few quizzes in the pile. I know how much work goes into a good quiz, and try to reward it with a high score. Usually when I make a low score on a quiz, I learn something new by taking it. That's good. New players (such as the crop that comes in each summer vacation) often base their ratings on their score. I try to warn takers when I've written a hard quiz, but putting them in the "Trivia Experts only" category doesn't work. I once read a book that broke "Genius" down into two categories: 'Genius 1" is a real genius - look at the leaderboard in most categories. 'Genius 2' is the smartest one in their family, and the rest of their family is in awe of them. Most 'Genius 2s' are fragile egos, so if they fail at something, it must be someone else's fault, and if you wrote the quiz that bruised their ego, they'll burn you. Look at how many folks never make it to level 2 or 3. These are the ones who generally trash your ratings. Maybe we need a requirement that you must make level 5 (or so) before your quiz ratings count.

Ooohh! I like that idea. You're right that most of the bombers are newbies. I also liked the definition of the 2 kinds of geniuses 'cause that makes me a genius 2 (now watch my little brother jump in and say HE'S the genius 2 of the fam).

If we all have the right to rate taken quizzes, how can you complain about anyone who rates within the scale given? Just because you write a quiz there is no guarantee that everyone will love it. What gives anyone else the right to even question another members rating system. I think Justin decided the 1 thru 9 scales was fair and that is good enough for me. I also tire of the add this or change that threads. Submit a support ticket with those silly little add ons and leave the Salty Dog to its intended purpose, which is name calling. Sploofus Rocks just as it is?

Uh oh! I hope I'm not a bomber! I rarely give 9s, and I'm sure I've given quite a few 5s. I was looking at it from the perspective that 9s and even 8s *should* be rare. What's their value if most the quizzes are rated that high? I usually reserve the top scores for something that really catches my attention by being clever or amusing or unusually interesting/informative.

I might have to rethink this approach! Had no idea anything less than an 8 would be considered a put-down!

Not sure how everyone else reads the scale, but being a retired teacher, I equate 9s with 90+ percentile. If I enjoy the quiz, it has minimal errors, and is creative, it's an automatic 9. I admit that I grade a little higher now that I've written several quizzes and I've seen how much work goes into one. The correct answer is the easy part. Framing the question is a little harder. Coming up with 4 consistently believable, interesting, and hopefully creative incorrect answers is often a bear! I was very pleased with my "Words Even Older Than Me" and its sequel, and they got very nice comments from Sploofusers whose opinions I value and trust. However, those are two of my lowest rated quizzes because of their difficulty.

I monitor my quizzes for the first couple of days after release. If someone finds an problem, I edit it if possible. You can also tell if your rating drops suddenly that someone bombed you. I'm still sensitive about my ratings, but not as bad as in the beginning.

I have seen the error of my ways. From now on, everyone gets a 9!

I never understand how folks know who gives what score. Sure, if that person is the first to take your quiz, I get that. But to say that Player XYZ always scores my quizzes low goes beyond my understanding.

I am guilty of not rating, I'm sorry but unless there is something incorrect I usually don't rate. I really wouldn't give anyone a bad rating though. If I take it, its probably a good quiz. Also I know how hard it is to write them.

If a quiz sucks, mark it accordingly. If it only deserves a 2 then so be it. I have taken two quizes here that deserved absolutely zilch, and marked accordingly, and was berated by an angry player who thought any old rubbish deserved an 8.
