U.S. PUZZLE CHAMPIONSHIP

Calling all puzzle fanatics! The 2009 Google U.S. Puzzle Championship takes place this Saturday, June 20, 2009, starting at 1 p.m. EDT and lasting 2 1/2 hours. (This is entirely different from the World Quizzing Championships held earlier this month and discussed in a separate thread.)

The U.S. Puzzle Championship is an interesting, challenging test administered over the Internet. The test is downloadable in PDF form, and contestants submit their answers through a website. Outside help (including computers) is not permitted. Contestants are limited to paper, pens, pencils, erasers and scissors. You can participate from the comfort of your own home.

Go to http://wpc.puzzles.com to read the rules and register. (Note that the first 3 letters are WPC. not WWW.)

Advance registration is required, before 9 p.m. EDT Thursday, June 18, 2009.

I participated in 2007, then forgot to register in 2008, but I'll be back in the competition this year.

The official purpose is to recognize the best puzzle solvers in the U.S., and to select one member of the U.S. Puzzle Team, participating in the World Puzzle Championship in November. Organizers of the Canadian and Italian puzzle teams also plan to use the results of the test in their selection processes. Unofficial participation is open to all puzzlers world-wide. (Nationality is determined by citizenship, not residence.)

There is a short (4-page) practice test available via the registration page at the above website, with sample questions in the same formats that will appear on the final test. Questions involve Sudoku, number logic, spatial reasoning, etc. The final test will be 13 pages long, and let me warn you that it will be tough. But if you are looking for a challenge, and want to see how you stack up against other avid puzzle-solvers, here's your chance!
