we need your input.

I belong to a small humane society group (not affiliated with any national organization) in North Platte, Nebraska. (city pop. about 25,000).

I'm trying to gather information to help our group work with the city to bring about changes in the way the city handles adoptions, s/n, etc.

Presently our shelter has a very low euthanization rate, probably the lowest in the state for any city-run shelter. However, part of that is achieved by letting anyone adopt a dog who comes in with the $30 adoption fee, even if they have been known to not be responsible owners in the past. Our group is horrified by this.

Also, they allow rural residents to adopt any and all cats for $1 a cat. I hear some people are regulars to do this. To us this means the cats are put out to fend for themselves and after they run off or are killed by dogs or coyotes, the people come back for more cats. Anyone else has to pay $20 to adopt a cat.

Our main focus has always been spay/neuter, plus we help pay for a lot of medical bills for pets whose owners can't afford larger bills. We are proposing that all adoptable animals be s/n before they leave the shelter and to raise the adoption rates to around $100 .

The city does not want to raise the fees. Their focus is to keep that euthanization rate low. Our stand is that euthanization would be more humane than cats being put out to fend for themselves or dogs treated cruelly or neglected.

Do you work with shelters? How do they handle adoptions? Do the shelters have veterinarians come in and do checkups on all animals brought in? Do you have any suggestions for us?

If you could help us with suggestions, we sure would appreciate it. Or perhaps you know of someone at a shelter who would visit with me by phone or e-mail.

To avoid the limit on characters, please e-mail me at

Thanks so much.

(I did post this in the pet lovers' group but no one saw it, so coming back to SD, where all the action is!)

In Amarillo on their cable lineup, they have a city channel. On this channel at times are listed things to sell, community announcements, etc. One of the pages was always a request for donations from one of the small towns nearby for items at their shelter (bleach was a big one, $$ always welcome). If there were a way to do something like this on a community page somewhere (online newspaper? classifieds?) maybe you could get some help without raising fees.
