CRICKET WP

Haha! A taste of our own medicine. Wish I could say I learned something, but afraid it all went over my head!

Ha! I was so happy to see a puzzle about cricket, until I found out it was not quite what I expected. Still, I learnt a few things I didn't know about the game.

I thought it was going to be about bugs. I had more incorrect guesses than correct guesses in this puzzle. Still was A-ok by me.

I think my cricket knowledge counted for very little; maybe some cultural appreciation but probably not even that.
The next puzzle on cricket will deal with a detailed explanation of the intereaction between lbw and the infield fly rule, not to mention the balk.

Very interesting WP, and a good range of subjects on the theme of cricket.

I have crickets in my basement, but they didn't help me one bit. The nerve.

A fun and informative introduction to a game I know nothing about. Thanks.

Ah, the Cricket WP a.k.a. Revenge of the English (Nerds ).

Will try it later. Now I will finally have to learn how this totally uninteresting sport works.

This WP was quite enjoyable, not really what I expected but it did not bowl me out for a duck. Cheers

Now I truly understand the complaints from the non-US'ers about the football, bseball, and American culture WPs.

What I want to know is do they take steroids to make their wickets more sticky? And are the googly pitches considered cheating, or just a personal choice?

Cricket anyone?
I believe this puzzle was written by a Brit.

Brilliantly written - I was in great shape until one word completely tripped me up on the last puzzle and Barry's dreaded "screen of death" appeared. But big kudos to the creator.

Well, at least I didn't have to learn the nitty-gritty of the sport.

Bowled out at 37 after one pink screen of death.

I don't get it. Aren't most of the screens pink?

Well, when you don't get it, the screen is pink.

Great puzzle with neat information that even a non-sports lover could enjoy, but there were a lot of those pink screens for sure!

We really did well. Didn't have to know a thing about the sport, which is a good thing.

(Note, all you Brits, none of us haughty ethnocentric Americans are complaining about a British WP) Tee hee

Gee my WP had 2 questions relating to the US & none taught me a thing about actually playing cricket. I was a bit disappointed but it was an interesting puzzle, nonetheless

Randy, you don't want to anything about how cricket is played.

FYI it is played SLOWLY. Games go on for days.

My copy of LTU&E has the planet's name spelled Krikkit. Whether that's unique to the US publication of the book, I don't know.

I lost 3 moves anyway, saying the name came from that planet, rather than the game.

I'm happy that some of you appreciated the "leveling of the field."

Cultural knowledge was precisely what I was trying for, rather than rules or statistics. The cricket puzzle featured references to the US, and the baseball puzzle included references to Britain. The clues were the same for both games and I balanced them as well as I could with the material available.

I'm terribly sorry about the misspelling of Krikkit. It was a last-minute change because I feared you'd be unhappy with "homophonic world" so I made it more straightforward. I should have checked, and I apologize for not doing that.

Thanks for all your comments!

To be perfectly fair the British puzzles should be in ENGLISH

with words like organise, labour . . .

All twenty of the sports phrases were in American English, as is the policy for Sploofus Word Puzzles. That is the standard to which all puzzles are edited. We try to use alerts (alt. sp.) in the clue if we deviate from that standard or use foreign words, local or slang spelling variations.

I believe "colorful" was the only instance of variable spellings in the two puzzles. I hope it did not cost anyone points.
