ARE YOU OK WITH THE 2010 CENSUS?

Weeks ago, there was news that the 2010 census has been "moved into the White House" and will be facilitated by ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now).

That having been said, the first 7 questions on the new census are pretty much predictable.

It's getting into the second part, the "American Community Survey," that gets really uncomfortable to me. There you see questions much more in depth about your life, your health insurance, the kind of fuels you use, and many questions that are taken right off the IRS 1040 (thus, I don't even understand why those questions are there).

You can look at it here: http://2010.census.gov/2010census/pdf/2010ACSnotebook.pdf

Did you know there are SEVENTY-SIX pages involved? I reduced it to 75% for easier viewing.

I remember several here in SD have commented on having issues with the government's (Homeland Security) invasion of privacy. How do you feel about the coming census?

hmmm. I works here. But it does take awhile to load.

As you see, it is the official site for the census.

I would find some of the questions invasive, but
I can also see their utility. The long form, it says,
is sent only to 1 in 6 households.

I looked at the site form but noticed that the questions being asked had the dates they (the questions) were originally put on the census form. The questions have been included from 1710 until 1999 with the exception of about three that dealt with health insurance, marital history and disability due to military service that were added, I think, in 2008. All census forms I have completed for the last forty years or prior to that time, I was included on a form by my parents, have become public record. After surveying the questions that were listed on the form from site in this thread, I don't see a problem with anything asked. As I stated above, the great majority of the questions have been asked since before I was born.

I am very uncomfortable about ACORN being involved iiin the census at all or getting taxpayer money to do-bsomething stripeed out in the wee hours to cut their funding. This group is under investigation for fraudulent voter registration in at least 14 state-cople of the "volunteers' have plead guilty to charges. Some of the members are pushing for an investigatioo nn of ACORN and groups ffiliated with it but that most likely will get nowhere either-Linda

May be. But I'm looking forward to further results from the investigation of ACORN. The scandals are widespread.

Census Bureau workers are federal government employees. They are required to pass a relatively difficult and rigid test procedure before being considered for hiring.
My local United Way has served as the main orientation and testing site for my county.
ACORN along with about 300 other partners is involved with the recruitment of potential employees. I am not concerned with their role.
Here is an excerpt from an FoxNews.com article.

ACORN spokesman Scott Levenson told FOXNews.com that "ACORN as an organization has not been charged with any crime." He added that fears that the organization will unfairly influence the census are unfounded.

"It will be the Census Bureau that determines the role and scope of its 300 national partners. ACORN is committed to a fair and accurate count," Levenson said.

The census is an official count of the country's population mandated by the U.S. Constitution. It is used to determine distribution of taxpayer money through grants and appropriations and the apportionment of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. Every U.S. household unit, including those occupied by non-citizens and illegal immigrants, must be counted.

Westmoreland and Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, a member of the House census subcommittee, said the panel has held hearings to make sure the penalties for census takers committing fraud are clearly defined.

"I feel fairly confident that the penalties for an individual manipulating the count are pretty severe," Chaffetz said. The penalty for any fraudulent activity can be up to five years in jail.

Thanks Al.

But there is an investigation into ACORN going on right now, though no charges have been filed on any of the many bases.

But there are several individuals working for ACORN in several states who have been indicted for fraud and are awaiting trial.

Thanks Alvandy
For those who don't want taxpayer money through grants and appropriations and the apportionment of the 435 seats in the House of Representative this should be a huge let down.

I worked in many capacities in the 1980 Census and learned a lot about many things in the way the government functioned at the time. Once I explained to those unwilling to participate its advantages they were more willing to accept the survey. The only problem I had was with a trans-sexual because the operation apparently wasn't done; so s/he didn't know what gender to apply.

Janice
Where can I find info on this investigation?

**Ousted ACORN members seek federal criminal investigation

A group of dissident members is seeking a federal investigation of ACORN for alleged criminal violations stemming from an embezzlement scandal that rocked the organization last year.

The splinter group, ACORN 8, released a 24-page document Wednesday that asks federal investigators to consider fraud, embezzlement and conspiracy charges, and criminal civil rights violations relating to the embezzlement of nearly $1 million from the nonprofit's accounts and an alleged cover-up of the theft for almost a decade.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/05/28/lawmaker-pushes-investigation-acorn-finances/ (Hate to reference Fox News, but all the other news agencies are so in the tank, they aren't really reporting on investigations into ACORN, which leaves me no choice)Most of the investigations into ACORN, the low-income advocacy group, have focused on voter registration fraud. But now lawmakers want to follow the money.

**Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, a member of the Judiciary Committee, is demanding congressional hearings into the financial structure of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

"I don't think they've been examined in any significant way at all," he said.

King questions the actions of ACORN officials as well as the multitude of nonprofit activist groups that apparently overlap with ACORN and share the same headquarters address in New Orleans.

"This spider web, this myriad web of ACORN dollars and revenue streams, every bit of them should be looked at, all the corporations that they are networked with all of the boards of directors of those corporations, the inner locking connecting, the faces that are the same from board to board."

ACORN believes an investigation of its finances is "...a continuation of the right wing Republican attacks which continues to stalk ACORN. This ACORN as 'punching bag' redundancy is not worthy of your audience."

But FOX News has found more than 250 nonprofit groups list ACORN's New Orleans headquarters as their address. Among them is Citizens Services Inc., a firm that was paid more than $800,000 by the Obama campaign for a get-out-the-vote program last year.

**Back to me. As I said, no indictments have been made. But the amounts of money involved and the number of locations involved will take a lot of time. I don't expect to hear updates any time near soon.

Time and investigation will tell if fraud has been committed.

ACORN's response to any unethical tactics are written off as everyone has bad employees watching and hoping for some kind of investigation although not sure now who might be impartial..

I will be thrilled if ACORN is found to be above board. There are so many people and issues, and so much money involved it will be a relief to not worry about them.

I didn't even know ACORN existed until the indictments of some employees for voter registration fraud. I had no idea so much taxpayer money supports the association until there was controversy whether the organization would receive stimulus funds.

Organizations are made up of ......... people.
There are bad "actors" in every bunch.

Some movies have bad actors too, but that's a different discussion.

Then why is it necessary if we are all regardless of our ethnicity supposed to be represented equally, is it necessay for anyone running or collecting the census to know it?

The census is used to dtermine district voting lines and thus impact elections. I want to be sure the people are actually honestly counting heads regardlees of anyone's ethnicity.

Until the IRS lets us take dogs as dependents, I don't feel like answering any of their nosy questions.
Really though, why don't they just use our "internet records". I'm sure there are some companies that know more about us than the census folks ever will.
