HOT TOWN, SUMMER IN THE...SMALL TOWN

Summer fell on us like a blanket overnight a few days ago. I had to turn the AC on when I was wetter after drying off from the shower than before. Also didn't want my furniture to mildew. I do like summer though, yes indeed.

I wish it would fall on us. This 70's crap isn't summer! I don't understand what happened to our summers?

I suppose I can take my snow tires off now, but you just never know anymore, since we got 4 inches of snow on June 10th of last year.

Bitter? Just a tad.

We've had record heat (saying something in Florida) and high rainfall this year. Been summer since April and no end in sight.

Mosquitoes are horrific in two varieties, big black floaty ones and little red tiger-striped dive bombers.

Breezy and not beastly hot and/or humid yet today, but the day is young and it's 89 in the shade on the back porch.

It's supposed to hit the mid 90's today. It's only 11 am and the sun tea is ready. But being in Michigan, tomorrow I may need a jacket.

Polly, I'm in the south of the state, don't know which part you are in. Heat index has been 110 since about Thursday of last week.

At least we aren't getting mosquitoes this year. Have only had 1 bite all summer and usually I spend my evenings chasing them down room to room. I guess the ice storm killed 'em - that's what the ol' timers say, anyway.

Li'l sucker got me twice this morning in bed, woke me up. Spent half an hour hunting in with a flashlight and a can of Raid. No luck, it's still in here somewhere...

I thought they died after they bit you. Or is that only spiders? or snakes? something anyway.

Bees. Their stingers pull out of their abdomens when they sting you. Unfortunately those skeeters, as we call them here in Southeast Missouri, can bite you again, and again, and again.....

I am rarely bitten because I usually won't go outside in the evening without a repellent.

Yes, they can. one mosquito can bite you as many times as you move until she gets her tank topped off. Then she heads off to find still water and lay a bajillion eggs, and then she dies.

Way not soon enough.

But if you hear one you can ignore it, that's a male, they don't bite.

Hard to ignore that awful buzzing noise in your ear at night. I swing and lash out like a madman. Like that's going to do anything.

One unanticipated surprise about where I moved - almost no mosquitoes. Over a period of years they knocked them out of the many sea lagoons hereabout.

And maybe I'm not quite as sweet as I used to be. Seems the flies and whatnot are attacking others nearby these days.

Skeeters are bad here in Tennessee this year because of all the rain we've been getting...Plus, we've had temps in the 90's the last week or so with 75% humidity...not my idea of a great summer...it only rains then it gets hotter...I may move to the mountains...it's at least 10-12 degrees cooler up there than in the valley...It was 80 at nine o'clock here this morning but there is a nice breeze blowing right now and it doesn't seem as hot as yesterday...

Moved half of the lawn today, will do the rest in the morning. Fairly big lawn, with a push mower, ouch! We did have a nice spring! It really lasted longer than usual..I miss it.

Yeah, can't imagine what the temps will be like during band camp this year in July. Good grief. How much you wanna bet I'm gonna have a rookie throw up or pass out? Stupid rookies. Just kidding.

Well, on June 24, we've had 20 days of rain so far this month here on the Jersey Shore. It's incredibly depressing to never see the sun and to get rain every damn day! YOu'd think we were in Seattle. Lawns may be green but we'll get plenty of mosquitos from all that water that's laying around. I'm starving for some heat and sun...
