Forget the political-religious-weather-WP-related threads. This is really important stuff!!

The Academy Awards are going to expand their Best Picture category to 10 - doubling the 5 they have now.>1=28101

So we can now have 9 films instead of 4 that no one has ever heard of before and was only seen by 50,000 people at selected theaters around the country. One of the dozen reasons I stopped watching or caring about the oscars.

One year they had 12 movies nominated for Best Picture. In 1939 they had 10 pix nominated.

"1939's 10 best-picture nominees were "Gone With the Wind," which won, "The Wizard of Oz," "Stagecoach," "Wuthering Heights," "Love Affair," "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "Of Mice and Men," "Dark Victory" and "Ninotchka." "

They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Some years they can't even find 5 good ones - like the year Gladiator won.

And that'll be 5 more films I'll probably miss over here. Do try to see some nominees in English though.

That's great.

You mean they don't think they can find the "best" one when they pick only 5?

I think someone just REALLY wants Land of the Lost to get a nom, and this is the only way to do it.

And Andy, never mind years when there weren't 5 good ones, sometimes there isn't even one. Or at least, how else to explain Terms of Endearment?

Or "Titanic", for that matter.

Oh, Ken, I loved "Terms of Endearment" and its haunting theme song. Jack Nicholson, Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, Jeff Daniels et al. Sorry you didn't.

However, this does give the Texas Chainsaw Massacres a little more hope.

Darnit - this is just a ploy to force me to buy more movies. I own every movie that has ever won best picture and nearly all of the nominees all the way back to 1928. In the late 30s and early 40s when they nominated 10 films they were nearly all worthy. The past few years at least one or two out of the 5 have been real stinkers - so now we'll have 6 or 7 crappy movies nominated. I vote

We can take this a different direction. I am going to start another thread.

Gary, I agree about the caliber of movies we see today, and I wonder what drives it -- the viewing public or the push for $$$ at the box office? Perhaps both. It's a heady experience to find an over-the-top film today, but also disheartening when it doesn't pass muster with the Academy. I don't watch the Oscars any more ... it feels like a dumbed down replica. Maybe I'm getting old and cranky

I hardly ever watch movies anymore. Just read a lot. However, I did rent "The Wrestler" last month, and thought it was amazing.

I hardly ever used to go to the movies, but our Cable company owns the local chain of movie theatres and one of the perks of paying a fortune for your "triple play" of internet, phone & TV from them is that you get 2 free movie tickets/week - only on Tuesdays. So, we try to take advantage of them if we can and if there is something that we want to see. Lately, we've been staying home more than we've been going. Funny how they seem to come in little spurts. There'll be 3 decent ones and then weeks of garbage.
