Exceptionally clever and challenging, and all in all great fun. Unfortunately I didn't figure out the theme until the third puzzle. I'm off to ice my recently slapped forehead.

Just didn't "get it" on the first one, but then the "penny dropped" on the second one and I LOVED it!!

Fun, fun, fun and VERY clever.
Thanks.

Yes, very clever. I was lucky enough to figure it out from the beginning, so that was a huge help. Like others, my brain now hurts.

You're some sick dude, Kaufman. And the worst part is that I started thinking like you. It's the red dye, I tell you.

I will be as kind as I can be and say I did not love this one. I guess I did not get this one as I was down to 3,500 points after the first puzzle and was pulling my hair out at that point. Oh well, everyone should be humiliated occasionally and evidently, this was my time for it. I guess I now know to avoid WP's by this author in the future.

I thought this was very clever. I "got it" on the first clue. It's just that I did not do all the well choosing letters.

Anyway, excellent job on the puzzle.

I too come down on the side of getting it but still doing awful. But Kauf-Man, you did a great job.

A++++!!!

I have to say that I am really enjoying the clever variety of WP's that have been coming down the pipe.

Shut!

Two unfamiliar core phrases and a proper name make for an unhappy me even thought I figured out the theme early.

Brilliant puzzle, Ken.

I did suspect the very theme before starting.

Kudos to those aces who solved it with at least 4500 points still in hand.

Not me, but I still gained on my nearest rival.

Well this was my favorite puzzle for a while -- may have been something to do with the excellent title and clues that got me off on the right foot.
I would have been happy to have thought of a theme as well executed as this ...a man can dream.....

Usually I hate short WP but I found this WP very funny. I lost a lot of points along the way but the usual WP big guns did the same. Good job.

Came in ninth -- not bad for me! Lost a lot of moves on my first phrase before I "got" the theme.
Good puzzle!

Thanks, everyone. As most of you surmised, the theme was spelled out in the title; if we were to replace the i's in familiar names or phrases with u's, we'd get:

Pamplona portals: Bull Gates
Astronomical menace: Seven Deadly Suns
Need to use your head: Game of Skull
Shoots softly: Cotton Gun
African warning system: Jungle Bells
Housing for the poor: Slum and None
Millinery Delivery: Hat truck
Stubborn Teen: Muley Cyrus
Unhappy Invertebrate: Sulkworm
Samsa Matriculates: Bug Man on Campus

Muley Cyrus took my longer than my other 4 combined but it was worth it - once the answer hit me I almost passed out from laughter.

The ones I didn't get are better than the ones I got! Slum and none?? How good is that?

Kudos upon kudos - well done, Ken!
