THEY REALLY ARE THE WORLD

http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_8127000/8127519.stm

ANT MEGA-COLONY TAKES OVER WORLD

A single mega-colony of ants has colonised much of the world, scientists have discovered.

Argentine ants living in vast numbers across Europe, the US and Japan belong to the same inter-related colony, and will refuse to fight one another. The colony may be the largest of its type ever known for any insect species, and could rival humans in the scale of its world domination.

What's more, people are unwittingly helping the mega-colony stick together.

Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) were once native to South America. But people have unintentionally introduced the ants to all continents except Antarctica.

These introduced Argentine ants are renowned for forming large colonies, and for becoming a significant pest, attacking native animals and crops.

...It now appears that billions of Argentine ants around the world all actually belong to one single global mega-colony....

(So what do we do? Bug spray? Have more dance contests - but have them outside so the stomping serves a dual purpose? Or just give up and "celebrate diversity" the way the Dirt Doctor says?)

I can see panic setting in in France already. I'm surprised you're not learning to speak "ant".

No problem, Dave. I go after them daily. Knocked out two nests in the ground today, but I can't quite figure out where they have a nest in my big olive tree.

Maybe Odile can help. She speaks Argentinian Spanish.

Ron - I'm so glad you posted that so I would be inspired to look up the quote. I never had - that's fun!

I knew my 2 high school bass players were always sneaking around writing on the board (to the consternation of the band drummers) "Join orchestra now! All your bass are belong to us."
