JUSTIN...

As someone that runs several communities.

You shouldn't ban topics. That is Orwellian. You ban people who can't discuss topics in a civil, mature tone without ad hominems, etc.

This path means you are censoring to the lowest common denominator -- in other words, a single offended interpretation by one moderator.

You already lost the chat boxes. Lose these boards and your community goes kaput.

Peace out.

I don’t know where to stand on this one.

On one hand, attempting to censor ideas is not only stupid but self-defeating.
Similarly, attempting to define offensive, political, etc. is futile.

On the other hand, this is Justin’s business. Just as Wal-Mart is not going to
let people argue in the aisles (because it will drive away business), Justin is
under no obligation to allow us customers to “harsh the mellow” and run off
new members.

Which leads me to an observation: To think that we (the present Sploofus
faithful) matter is pretty self-centered. If we get pissy and leave, so what?
Others will take our place. We are temporary. The site can survive without us.

You are correct on that one, Ross, I quit three times to make some kind of point which I have now forgotten. Was talked about and missed for probably a day or two .A couple of people made a bigger splash because they represented something bigger than themselves. . The individual is not important but the issue is, I believe, to keeping the site viable as Smaug points out. Linda

I just posted to the "WARNING: POLITICAL!" thread on this:

http://www.sploofus.com/bbs_detail.sp?post=165366&cID=7

You are 100% correct and I didn't intend to imply the banning of any topic.

Thanks Smaug,
Justin

Thanks Justin. Now I hope you realize how important it is for you to keep your hand in sploofus. When you don't, things get really weird.

Over here they own the Asda stores, and there's plenty of arguing in their aisles. The customers aren't much better either. As far as new members are concerned, i'd worry about the current members renewing if i were him.

Is Sploofus the right place or website for any political and religious discussions? Let you ponder over this question. Personally, I know where I stand given any political or religious discussions will always generate disagreements and strong languages. I am not surprised that the forum needs moderators.

I think that we pretty much know where everyone stands on everything. Debate without insults is a entertaining pastime. The arrogance of some posters ruins what is otherwise a very stimulating forum of views. I am resorting to voodoo dolls and pins instead of confrontation. Lodi, send my socks to my new address.

Smaug has a valuable and intelligent thread here. I agree with the orwellian analogy and I don't care for censoring. However, I have gotten insulted on several occasions and have insulted back. Now, I try to take a step back and I don't often comment when an individual posts who I disagree with. I know who I can debate with now and who just gets me too upset. If real hard core deletion occurs on these threads that would really prompt me to think about engaging in other sites. Part of the fun of sploofus is getting to know players that post on SD. I don't want big brother reading and censoring everything to their idea of what is acceptable.

No comeback is as powerful as ignoring an insult and politely answering a post from another member.

The nasty comment sits there smoking on its own. On boards where it can be deleted the poster often goes back and deletes in a day or two.
