Hey folks --

What I originally envisioned the Sploofus Groups to be has not yet materialized. It's half baked.

The idea isn't half baked, just the programming (not the programmer) is.

I'd really like to hear some of your feedback (especially from Lodi) on what features, bells and whistles you would like to see that would make the groups something useful to you. I think the idea really has merit given the amount of content we have here at Sploofus. The tough part is just trying to figure out a slick way to integrate it into the groups.

Another thing I will be working on is finding someone to serve as "Group Czar" - someone responsible for reviewing suggested groups, properly categorizing them, and getting them approved and activated in a timely fashion.

Thank you for your time,

May I suggest Barry for the CZAR position as he would be perfect

Well, I'm no Lodi but I have been waiting and waiting for Groups to take off

Get the programming (or moderator) in place to get new groups up and running quickly

Fix the programming that boots you out of some groups and keeps you in some you quit

Fix the programming to allow people to be in as many groups as they want (or at least more than 6 - maybe 2 for free members, 10 for Gold and unlimited for Platinum)

Add a link to the discussion board of each group one belongs to into the righthand frame of the regular forum screen, right under the 8 regular forums in the list - this would make it really simply for me to get to my personal group discussions when I am in discussion mode

Add a link after posting any photo to your profile to ask if you want it ALSO posted to a Group

Possibly, at the end of each quiz, have a link (or links) suggesting groups that a player might like if they liked that quiz; group members or quiz authors could identify which quizzes should lead folks to certain groups
I'm sure I have more ideas, but that's the few right off the top of my head!

What she said. But I would seriously be happy if they just worked. It really torqued me off when I put in for a group and no response. Support ticket number 1, no response. Support ticket number 2, no response. Bitchfest in the threads resulted in an editor saying "put in a support ticket."

It was weird getting kicked out of some groups, having groups added from which you had removed yourself, etc.

How awesome would it be if each group had its own shout? Then you could go in and have real time chats with like-minded people on your favorite subjects.

Bet if you create a poltics group that WORKS it willl be the much more popular than any group on art or astronomy or anything else. Bet there will still be people that complain endlessly that such a group exists at all because they canot help but look. I put a political warning on any thread that I start so folks are free to avoid them as no surprises dunno

I am replying to your objection to the political threads as well as the creation of groups. The Sploofus you envision believe we had when we were small and 1.0 was in place. We are no longer small and believe the only way you can get people with same interests to feel that "small' sensation (can't grasp the appropriate word) is to create and use the forums already there and give the proper directions for what should be posted where and mean it. The group thing if they work might also achieve it but when EVERYTHING is thrown into 'Salty Dog" as big as the site now is, it will be chaotic suggest all you will. Check the last time and number of replies in any of the other forums like "Ask the Audience". Linda

New people must wonder why there are warnings on threads. How inviting is that? Seems to me that no matter what you discuss, if you do it civilly, you don't need a warning. Unless the warning is really that people in the thread may not be nice to you if you disagree with them.

Linda and others, think a bit about how you might like to see a politics group run. Would you like one big group for all things political, or separate groups for, say, US, British, Commonwealth and World politics? (I organized those suggestions that way based on the site's demographics.) Or should there be separate groups for discussion of certain parties, philosophies, etc? All of these could work, after all.

A programmer I am not .I have trouble even typing. Just am not clear why the other forums exist at all as they are seldom if ever used. No, Smoke, a warning on ny thread is probably not inviting to someone new. - not surprised you pointed that out Neither is feeling when you enter here that everyone is "in" on something and you are not-been there too. There are so many people here now that we get prayers , hugs, politics, puzzle criticism, deaths of celebrity and otherwise and illness of people that when we were a small group pretty much everyone cared.-now most don't even know the person. Probably if I knew anything about how to do any of this would start with basics.I would first put ALL things political-that seems to be the one most SAY they find offensive- in another forum with appropriate directions. The current direction fit only the Salty Dog -anything and everything- which makes it chaotic as attempting to find common ground in a large group probably won't happen If you try and then say one topic is off limits after you have said "anything and everything" there will be hard feelings.. If politics are not allowed then that must be stated as clearly in the terms and conditions as appropriate language is nd that gives people the option of deciding if the want to pay and participate. In order to regain "small" which to me intimates common interest and caring one would have to start somewheree as currently a mess. Forums with appropriate directions and groups that work seem to make sense as starters before any more 'Do something to someone ' things. Now that Justin seems to BE here perhaps he can create the atmosphere he wants as people who don't will get to know him Personally have not a whit of interest in astronomy but sure there are folks here who do. Start small with basic working features an perhaps somehow the personal vendettas will stop- not sure Linda

I think there should be political groups set aside for those with like minds, and for those who would like to debate issues with others. If there are cat lover groups, and that group is reserved for only those people who love cats, then there needs to be a mechanism to ban those who would surely join the group only to cause problems, tell everyone how much they hate cats, and declare that anyone who loves cats is an idiot. Those kinds of discussions would be for another group where all pet lovers could debate which pet is the best. Does that make sense?

I think it would be nice for those who would like to discuss matters with those of the same belief, without the possibility of ridicule or beratement, whether that be politics, religion, cats, dogs, reality shows, substance abuse, etc. People who post in the threads know that their thoughts are vulnerable to the response of someone who vehemently disagrees with them. I believe groups would be a great place for those who would love to share in discussions, but would otherwise not post due to the fear of the response.

Groups are a great idea but firstly, they have to work, and secondly, there has to be a way to control them.

I agree Lodi but think the thing that most peope who enjoy talking politics is the disagreeing part. so separtion by like minds there would not be needed. Totally see your logic on the religiion and cats and stuff. Totally agree with you that first thing is that everyhing work. It doesn't make sense tio begin and end with the idea like 'The Island". What was that about? Use what you have and build on it makes sense to me.

That's why I proposed 2 different kinds of groups, Linda; one for those who don't want to debate, and one for those who do.

I like a "Political" marker. Sometimes I feel like a nut.
Sometimes I don't. Title tells me what to expect.

I have typed in a request to know when ever anyone responds to this thread. i guess no one ever responded or ... Gasp ... the software. Anyway, the Travel group, initiated by Surreyman is a great idea for trading ideas when planning a trip. So ... you type in where you are going and all of a sudden twelve folks who care, respond with ideas of food, lodging and not well known secrets. For example: in Washington D.C. your Congressman will fly a flag over the capital for your spouse or anyone else you name and send it to you for a pitence. Should you be thinking of a Christmas present, now is the time to get the flag flown.

Justin ... I am glad that you care.

I have a flag that was sent to me, flown over the capital on my birthday. It may have been for a pittance, but its dear to my heart because its our flag, because it was flown over the capital, and because of who requested it for me.

Allena ... would they really fly a Welsh flag for me over your Capitol? .......................!!

I was always expecting the Groups to really take off, and they could/should.
Yes, first fix the software so that they work!!
And, mainly I think, publicise them.
Especially, re-fix the email announcements of each post, that's what really used to get one back into them each time.
On the home page show groups that have received 'last 24 hour' posts, with an easy click entry.

Just make 'em obvious and easily hit, and announce them prominently.

I see Linda volunteered my name; thank you! W*at a sweet thought --and how totally irrelevant since I dont want to participate in groups. Salty Dog is enough for me.
If I understand it right though, we might get a political group or two set up where all the participants wanting to debate matters of the day could post or unlike messages. All controversy would immediately vanish and all would be sweetness and light
What a great idea! Let's do that as soon as possible -- but please include me out.

I will count on you not participating in anything political ,Barry, as you are much too subtle in making your points for me. Perhaps the Salty Dog hafd be devoted exclisively to nitpicking of puzzles but am sure if and when the politics go all will be congenial and sweet if things work

J -- just be aware that tossing action off into groups will severely cripple these boards.

I said that I know nothing about making a site work. I do know that the political threads get the most views period. There are complaints about not being warned that it is one and then complaints that a warning is intimidatiting to new people. Think your idea of baning people not topics is the most viable short term at least solution. F this is a MENSA site only open to the intellectually gifted who stick to subjects like books, art ,botany , astronomy etc, then say so. Believe it was TSK who said he finds many topcs boring but does s not suggest they be banned. It just does not seem the time to introduce something new but could be dunno. At one point a suggestion was made to limit the number of times someone could post in a given period. I don't believe that is the answer either Linda

Thank you for the constructive input Linda. I do appreciate it!

Have a great day,
