I HAVE A QUESTION PLEASE...

My son Justin plays the guitar and he was looking at websites that have the chords and things so he can play the rock music that he likes...Anyway, he came across several sites in his search that shows some of the greatest songs and instrumentals in rock history...in almost every list Led Zepplin's Highway To Heaven is ranked number one. I was just wondering what rock song you think should be number one or do agree with the majority that Highway To Heaven is the greatest rock song ever?
I'm just curious as to what you all think...I think it would be a tie between Highway To Heaven and Free Bird...

I don't think it is possible to answer this question. We could debate for days on what is rock and what is not. Do we use the classic definition of rock and roll, or the ever expanding list of offshoots? Whatever it is, it will have to be a live cut, not a sterile, studio cut for me to buy in.

How can you possibly pick just one?

Layla.

Every Breath You Take. Crying.

Whiter Shade of Pale. Heard It Through the Grapevine.

You Can't Always Get What You Want.

The lists were compiled of rock songs from the 50's up to 2005...I don't know how they can determine the lists of the greatest like they do but even with lists that were made up of fans of rock and roll music Stairway To Heaven still ranked number one on most of the lists. I checked on the Rolling Stone magazine website and even Rolling Stone ranked this song number one! If they were to take it decade by decade I think if would be easier...It would be hard to pick just one as there are so many great rock and roll songs out there I agree...So, why not take it by decade?
Here's my list:
The 50's: Jailhouse Rock by Elvis
The 60's: Turn Turn Turn by The Byrds
The 70's: Joy To The World by Three Dog Night
The 80's: Hotel California by The Eagles
The 90's: Enter Sandman by Metallica
The 00's: Kryptonite by Three Doors Down
I know that everyone will have different songs and all...I was just wanting to know your choices...My son can play Stairway To Heaven and it sounds just like Led Zepplin..(I know I'm just a wee bit prejudice here...) LOL

In my opinion Stairway to Heaven is the best rock song ever written.

Vickie - any rock guitarist worth his salt has to be able to play Crazy Train, Sweet Child o' Mine, Back in Black, Highway to Hell, & Sweet Home Alabama. You need to mix in Eruption, some Sunshine of your Love, and a little Hendrix.

My son's current idol is a solo guitarist named Buckethead. His favorite song to play by him is called Big Sur Moon.

Many radio stations at one time will play the top 500 or 100 songs of all time. I have lived in many parts of Canada and here are some the songs that came out number one in their compilation.

Stairway to Heaven/ Led Zeppelin

Hey Jude / Beatles

Can't Get No Satisfaction/The Stones

Hotel California/The Eagles

Rock Me All Night Long/AC/DC

Bohemian Rhapsody/ Queen

In 1977 radio station CHNS in Halifax Nova Scotia offered a large cash prize to anyone who could guess the number one song up to that time. Many rock songs, some mentioned above were played but The Last Farewell by Roger Whittaker was number one. No one had picked that song. I had never heard it.

I love the guitar riff in the middle of (You're the) Devil in Disguise. If I could find just that segment, I would set it as my ringtone when my mother-in-law calls.
