I always considered it parody.

When he first got his own show some critics said he wouldn't
be able to maintain the character for very long. I guess he
showed them.

He makes quite a good 'straight' interview ie when he is not trying to be funny.
If I remember rightly he is from South Carolina and quite a religious catholic. My pre-judgment would have been that his sense of comedy would not be consistent with that upbringing; but there again I was introduced to Funny Times by an ex Vietnam vet...
Does anyone else read this by the way?

Yes, and it hasn't moved to FOX yet, oddly enough.
