Yes! Hard!

I hope the author will explain it tomorrow!

I cleared the board on one, even though later it turned out that I was making it harder than it needed to be.

I didn't get the theme.

I figured it out on my 67th letter.

Wow, I must be clueless because I never did figure out how either the title or the clues had anything to do with the answer. I survived on pure luck. I am also hoping for an explanation.

I will join the chorus and admit I didn't comprehend the premise either!

I will also look forward to an explanation...

I got the theme -- didn't do a bit of good figuring out the answers though ... I feel humbled

Didn't get it at all.
Just tried to solve the words and make a plausible sentence!!

Still can't think of any connection between the title, the clues and the answers.

I agree, did not make any sense to me at all. Just went with letters and tried to figure it out.

This was the first WP I've had time to do all month, and what a delight! I love such a clever and challenging puzzle. After some thought, I figured out what was going on. Wonderful variety of phrases! Thanks for a lot of fun!

I DID get it, and I understood the clues, but I still used twice as many letters as Bbear!

My problem was not having the knowledge to follow thru - and I thought the clues could have been more helpful...but I'll have to wait til it's over to say more.

Definitely a brain twister. But then, I think we need one to really put us in our place every now and then

Call me clueless in York.
A peppermint pattie treat helped.

P.S. my eye is recovering well- hope to play more games in the next few weeks.

It made no sense. Once I figured out the phrase, I googled what it described, as pertaining to islands, sunken or otherwise, and there was no connection.

I'm throwing my keyboard in with the majority - this is the first puzzle whose theme I never figured out.

Al says he's better, but he's obviously really not 100% yet - I can tell because he ALWAYS understands these themes - yet he didn't get this one.

I'll just keep praying for you, brother. Cause if YOU don't get it, I don't stand a chance in.....heck.

I was amazed to find out i didn't do too bad, 30th at the moment. I have absolutely no idea what that was all about, quite enjoyable though.

I'm shaking my head and trying to correlate how this all went together. I really thought i was stupid till I read this thread. Feels good not to be alone.

solved all clues (in tearing hurry) with no idea what was going on.
Will wait two hours to find out -- not a bad puzzle though.....

Filling in the WP wasn't a real problem. The only thing I could figure about the WP title and clues was that they belonged to a different puzzle that just got mixed up with the one we were doing. After the first 2 clues, I just ignored them.

Sploofernatural has asked us to explain the puzzle. It was a mystery to most of us! Sploofernatural also apologizes, and promises it won't happen again.

Each puzzle had the name of an island hidden among the words of the puzzle. For example:

the yankee clipper got a hit in fifty six consecutive games ("Pacific Ocean")

If you look carefully, you will see the island of Tahiti hidden in "got a hit in". All the islands were in the appropriately named oceans. Among the other islands were Hawaii, Malta, and Aruba.

I got it, but not until #3, too late to save it. The clues were helpful once I figured out what I was looking for.

The name of an island was "sunken" in each puzzle, hidden in the phrases, and the clues were the bodies of water where the island is located. The one that tipped me off was about a Roman critic giving Hee Haw a ii rating (Pacific Ocean).

Now that I know, I want a do-over.

Brilliant idea -- well executed and no apologies necessary.
Just because we (and I mean I) are too stupid to crack it does not mean you should not weigh us in the balance and find us wanting. So please when enough time has passed don't hesitate to use the same stratagem.
Now you tell me I feel stupider than before.....

Yup, in retrospect....... and given the name of the WP........ that's fair enough by me. Way too clever for me as it happened, but fair enough.

I'm not buying it.

Any more than that thing about how monkeys could randomly type out a Shakespeare play if given enough time.

Nah. Nope. Huh uh.

Justin, could you please start a "Sploofus, Jr" for dummies like me? I just don't belong here!

I kept trying to make the puzzle logical rather than clever.

DUH! I coulda had a V8!

No doubt that it was "clever" in the way the answers were created. Must have taken a lot of thought, a lot of work, and a lot of smarts.

However, even if you knew that was the "key" to the puzzle, it wouldn't have helped solve it. Even if the clue was simply "Hawaii," I think it would have been incredibly tough to solve. Notice that the three leaders, Virtus, Digs, and me, all had no clue. Some folks got it and didn't score nearly as well.

Pretty darn frustrating. But, hey, I guess it was equally frustrating for us all. And I'd rather a puzzle be hard than unfair.

I didn't love it, but with all the clever titles we've had lately, I should've cracked it sooner. The puzzle was very creative and tough but totally fair and googleproof. I'd rather have too hard than too easy.

If I'd got the Hawaii one first I could've RULED!

Garrybl  (Level: 294.1 - Posts: 6803)
Wed, 15th Jul '09 10:20 AM

I DID get the Hawaii one first.
But I had what I knew was a max of 15 minutes to do the puzzle before work started so thought I'd work the them out on the second clue.
Not so much......

I got the Hawaii one on Puzzle #5; unfortunately, it was 67 letters too late.

Even if you cracked the theme - which I never did - I don't know that it would have helped much. Just knowing that you were looking for the name of an island somewhere in the words wouldn't have helped me, anyway, with the sentences. I didn't do badly on the puzzle, just guessing what the phrases were, but it wasn't because I understood the theme.

OK, thanks for the explanation!

Now...somebody please write a puzzle about islands that are above ground!

Hmmm...maybe I will...

I missed this one thanks to a late, late, late show of *Harry Potter.* I got home a little after 6 a.m. (stopped off for a biscuit and orange juice), sat down at my computer at 6:45 (after reviving shower and ingestion of said biscuit and orange juice), woke up at 8:02 with my chin resting on my laptop. Cue swearing.

It sounds, though, like this one would have befuddled a fuzzy brain.
