Sunny wants everyone to know she's missing her Sploofus friends. She's been struggling for some weeks with a tide of family troubles that are keeping her running between hospitals and home. Her 86-year-old mom had a urinary tract infection she ignored long enough to land her in the hospital on a wide-spectrum antibiotic drip, touch and go for a while, but she's out of the hospital now and improving.

However, just as they were making arrangements for her mother's care, her brother was in an accident that shattered his leg, and he is likely to lose his foot. His status is day-to-day, and surgery was postponed today because he has no infection and no new necrosis, so there is hope. He's her closest brother and she's at the hospital as much as she can manage, while also caring for her mom and dad.

She's grateful for the messages asking where she's been, and she'll answer them all when she next gets some time for herself.

Sun would like to thank everyone very much for their concern and well-wishes. Today was a day of good news for her brother Paul, the surgery to place a pin in his leg was successful, chances of recovering use of the limb are very good. Next up will be the arduous and lengthy skin grafts, but physicians are optimistic about his coming through this intact.

Thank you dear friends. Your concern and support has been a tremendous help and source of comfort.

When my brother went into surgery yesterday we did not know if his foot would be amputated or not. He kept positive and continuously thankful he was alive at all (we all are). He has only asked for prayers and I had told him that my Sploofus friends from all over the world were praying for him. He asked that I thank you all.

After 6 hours of surgery we were there as he came to. He asked: "Do I still have a foot?" When his wife told him, yes, tears rolled down his face. Tears flowed in the entire room. He said, "It's a miracle."

It is. The doctors agree. I have seen pictures of his can't even tell it's a leg, as it was nearly severed and a good three inches of missing bones that were shattered. He now has a rod pinned in place below the knee to his heel and the beginning of "internal" reconstruction which will be followed by "external" reconstruction of tissue and skin. Doctors can do amazing things, but the miracle was his lack of infection and dead tissue in his foot due to lack of blood supply.

Paul said his miracle was due to everyone's prayers: "even people that don't know me all over the world were praying for me, that had to make an impression". He's a joker, my brother. Thanks to all of you again.

Sploofusers are wonderful people.

Just talked to Consuelo, on her way out the door to go to the hospital. The news is not good and she's not in a good place about it, so she wanted me to let everyone know she's sorry but she's not up to posting yet until things are more settled.

Her brother's condition has deteriorated and there has been more dead tissue and two more surgeries to remove it, and he is going in again today; the doctors won't actually advise him what to do, but they're pressing him to sign the permission for the amputation before he goes under again. He's torn and still wants to fight to keep his foot but the family is not all in agreement so it's very difficult for everyone emotionally.

She sounds drained on the phone, exhausted from hours in the car and at the hospital (60 miles away) every day, plus her mother's ongoing medical problems are demanding on her time and strength as well.

She sends heartfelt thanks to everyone for all the kind thoughts and prayers, she deeply appreciates the support and we'll hear from her soon.

Hopefully this will not be viewed out of place, or inappropriate, but I know a guy who lost a his foot in an industrial accident. It was a fairly clean detachment that offered a fair choice of reattachment. The orthopedist wanted to leave it detached. The plastic surgeon wanted to try to reattach it. He opted for reattachment. The next couple years were a nightmare for him, and his family. There was a lot of pain and pills. There was progress, regression, complications, the works. He was nearly incapacitated from the pills, could not really use the foot for anything viable. After two years of hell and a lot of soul searching, he went back to the orthopedist and arranged to have it removed. In an appropriate time after the detachment he was fitted with a prosthetic. Within months he was comfortable with it, off almost all of the meds and most importantly, a dad and husband, again. I am not advocating this option....just putting it out there in the realm of thought. I also know a person who lost both feet as a small child about 30 years ago in a farm accident. In that case they were successfully reattached and he has been fine ever since.

Entirely appropriate, I should think. You've pretty much laid out the two extremes. Sunny feels he would be better off to have the amputation. Even if the foot could be saved, several inches of bone and tissue were pulverized, and the leg would be quite a bit shorter than the other. Hard to know what it would feel like when it's your foot, though.

Hello friends, I am finally home for a day and so thankful. Your words and messages of thoughtful kindness and support has meant so much to me. You have given me much comfort.

Update: Paul has had several more surgeries. He still has his foot. I hope this does not turn into the scenario that Steve shared in his post, because it may. But for now, it is what Paul wanted to happen. The docs are now saying his chances of keeping it are 80%...a big improvement. He has more surgeries and hospital time to face, we are taking it one day at a time.

He has been outfitted with a Wound VAC, something they developed for soldiers in Iraq (severed and damaged legs being very common there). If you are interested, it is easily google-able and there is even a UTube video of one being changed, if you are not squeamish.

My mother is now fully recovered from her crisis as well.

No words can adequately convey my gratitude for your caring, but I thank you again.

I watched a couple of the Wound VAC recordings. That's amazing! I'll keep praying, too! With medical advances like that and God's healing touch, I hope your family finds encouragement and hope. And try to take care of you, too. I know you're a strong woman, but even you need a break to refresh that strength.

I'm so happy to hear you mother is recovering
and your brother still has his foot, because that's
what he wants....
Agree with the person who said "it's time to take
care of yourself - all that driving and hospital
visiting is exhausting.
Even the best and the strongest people need a
break from all the worry.

Sunny asked me to post.

Her brother is still going through surgeries to move muscles from his arms and legs to support the foot. The surgeons have decided not to amputate. Sunny (and I) are worried that the nerve damage will be severe.

Paul is still in serious condition and needs your thoughts and prayers both to make the best decisions possible ... and for the his health and the health of his family.

From Sunny ... Thanks for your love and support.

Hello everyone,
Sorry I have been so silent for so long. My brother is in the process of rebuilding his leg…and it is going well overall. It is up and down though…which is why it’s difficult to keep you posted. There are times of great joy and relief…then a setback…I just can’t bring myself to report when we never know what’s going to happen next. After 37 days in the hospital, he was released, then back in a week with an infection. That’s where he is to this point. He’s had three skin/flesh grafts.

I have often felt a great comfort in the many Sploofusers that have sent me words of comfort, thoughtfulness, and kindness in private messages and other venues. I humbly thank you as your caring has always raised my spirits. I am blessed with so many Sploofus friends. I am looking forward to being here often again…once I catch up with work, etc. and all is done.

PS: I really feel like I've been gone for a year once I went through pages of posts to find this one. It's going to be very difficult to catch up!
