TOM LEHRER WP

Barry, you made my day. One of my all time favorite WPs. Love Tom Lehrer and thought your WP was not only lots of fun, but a great homage to this badly missed genius. I enjoyed them all, but I think there's one (at least for any "serious" Tom Lehrer fan) that's a dead giveaway as soon as you see it.

Great WP with a nice mix of those elements we love about Lehrer.

Love Tom Lehrer and loved this WP. A great tribute to the slightly demented genius that is Lehrer. Thanks Barry!

Glad the comments are positive; I was not sure if this was too obscure for a 'ten things' puzzle -- but I'm pleased to see other people like him too.
He changed my perception of comedy -- until I heard his songs I did not realize there was a place for sick people like me....

Loved it. Thanks for writing something for my generation. I will now sing the rest of the night.

Too fun. Too cute.

Dave - you need to come running and screaming into this century.

Loved it!

Beth, because I'm a Tom Lehrer fan??? I don't think I'm the only one.

I have no clue who Tom Lehrer is/was but did enjoy the puzzle and actually did better than I expected, not knowing who this was.

I think it's a generation thing.

Unless all the questions reference *The Electric Company,* I am doomed.

Yet I can always turn a "dam" into a "dame" thanks to him.

Dave, I thought you meant Tom Lehrer had died ... whew! But yes, I do miss him, too. After the WP has closed I'll say more.

Barry, today is my birthday ... I'm assuming you intended this WP just for me. Even if you didn't, thank you anyway

Never heard of Tom Lehrer? You poor people! If you are at all a fan of satire, clever song lyrics, word play, dark humor, mixing of musical genres, or comedy, you simply MUST acquaint yourself with this man's music!

He was a math professor, if that makes a difference to anyone

Oops, I see now where my wording suggested that he died! Sorry, Colleen. I just meant, of course, that it's unfortunate that he went into hiding for most of the last several decades.

Agree, Dave -- I just learned that he is 81, wow! I have his 'That Was The Year That Was' album, I wore out two vinyl LPs, thank God for CD's. He was SO good, so timely. I encourage people to listen to him -- math lovers will enjoy 'New Math'.

One of the songs that did not make it to the record -- i wonder why? is my favorite.
Is called 'I got it from Agnes'.

You can locate it easily enough on the net though.

I first heard it in a review of his music called Tomfoolery at if memory serves me right the Criterion in London -- must be 25 years ago, and the ony actor I recall in it was Robin Ray --who was surprisingly good.

Lehrer stopped performing when (as he put it, approximately) the things he was laughing about ceased to be funny any more. His was the era before Vietnam and it was still possible to be optimistic about foreign policy.

That Was the Year That Was was a 1968 release, I believe, a most tumultous year in many ways ... it would be a stretch to do satire or dark humor on events of that year. I wish he had continued with the non-political satires, he was a genius. Who else could have done songs like 'I Hold Your Hand in Mine" and "The Vatican Rag"? His lyrics are unforgettable -- "Werner von Braun, a man whose allegiance was ruled by expedience -- once the rockets are up, who cares ver zey come down, zat's not my department says Werner von Braun" . The MLF lullaby -- 'once all the Germans were warlike and mean but that couldn't happen again ... we taught them a lesson in 1918 ... and they've hardly bothered us since then ... " Brilliant.
