WTHAI TALK -- AUG., SEPT. OCT. 2009

Hi folks!

Sorry I'm late in starting this thread. Please join me in congratulating new Sploofus member Leenah, who solved the first WhoTHAI of August -- the stumper Eugenie Clark. Way to go! Congratulations also to Kateatebate and Larrybus for their double WhereTHAI wins over the past couple of days. Kate solved the first Where of August. Woo hoo, you two!

Happy hunting everyone!

Here was the photo that was on the WTHAI - Lilias Folan. I thought she had long braided hair when she had her PBS show. I may be confusing her with someone else?

I thought she did too. Although, that comes from my memories of waking up to her getting ready for kindeegarten.

I wish Joee was my teacher. She knows every building on Earth!

Judy Blume was another face that bugged me. I just knew I knew that face, but it took me several minutes to figure it out.

Congratulations on solving Judy Blume, Pepper!

Please join me in congratulating Jo, who won six of the last 10 WhereTHAIs. That included three double wins. Woo hoo and way to go! She also won a WhoTHAI last Friday!

In between Jo's wins, Dabomb619 had a double WhereTHAI win. Way to go!

Thank you, Larry, for tracking that down!

Many congratulations also to Kate who solved Little Snoring, England, after only 1 tile! That broke up a nasty string of six stumpers or near stumpers in a row. So, way to go, Kate!

And congratulations to all the other winners!

I talked with Kate and she said it was OK to let you all know how she solved Little Snoring, England. She said she remembered a stumper we had from last year -- Great Wakering. Do you remember that? Here's the Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Wakering

The puzzle was of the village sign and looked like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/29539486@N03/2896205859/in/set-72157607563684757/

Well, I don't know about you, but I thought the last two WhereTHAIs were pretty interesting. I had a bit of trouble tracking down the source photo for Almaty Kazakhstan, but finally found it. (That's why I don't win these things! ) Click here to see what the puzzle looked like: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E8613-Almaty-Zodiac-Fountain.jpg

Those critters that make up the fountain are cute.

Apples are my favorite fruit, so I found it interesting to learn that "the region is thought to be the ancestral home of the apple." I love apples. My current favorite variety is Jazz, from New Zealand. It's a cross between Gala and Braeburn -- two other favorites. Boy, I'm making myself hungry, and it's 1 a.m.!

Congratulations to Jo on her double WTHAI win today, solving Shauntay Hinton and Treetops Hotel Kenya. Way to go and woo hoo!

And kudos to all of the other winners!

Congratulations to Kate, who broke up another string of stumpers or near stumpers by solving the Reading Pennsylvania WhereTHAI today. Way to go!

For the Bogoviceva Street Zagreb Croatia WTHAI, click here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Views

The puzzle depicted the sun. Pretty neat. The clue for this one was: "Copernicus might be intrigued by this sculpture."

Happy solving, everyone!

The picture which was guessed as Irazu Volcano was the Poas Volcano which is on the main Costa Rica page, also listed under Poás Volcano National Park as well as several other places in wikipedia. And dozens on google images as Poas Volcano national Park.

Apologies for the volcano mix-up. Joee has been awarded her points for guessing correctly.
Apologies also for today's "Phonm Penh" typo! Good job Eqitriv, for sticking with it 'til you found the right combo.

Adding yet another entry to the 'coulda woulda shoulda' stakes is Oliver Sacks.
Oliver wwent to the same school and college as I did; we meet at school/university meetings once a year or so -- both based in New York....
I was showing a picture of him from the back cover of awakenings to illustrate what a dead ringer for Robin Williams -- or vice versa -- he was, on Saturday.
Alas while he was WTHAI, I was in transit to Brazil.

Thanks so much! This is my first-ever Where win, so I'm pretty psyched! To be honest, I never Google, so all of the wheres until this one were pretty much impossible for me to figure out. I got this one because I've been there numerous times! It's a wonderful, and historic, location. Washington Crossing, Pa., is where good 'ole George landed his boat after crossing the Delaware River from New Jersey, a true turning point in the birth of our nation. Not only is there a fabulous park, there are lots of historic buildings that have been preserved by the historical society. Each December, there is also a re-enactment of the famous crossing at the site by folks dressed in full and authentic American Revolutionary regalia, right down to the black-powder weaponry! The actor who plays Washington even wears the appropriate and recognizable white wig. As you can imagine, the event is very well-attended and a lot of fun! I'm from California, so it really was something when I moved here and saw first-hand this historic site -- one that I had read about my whole life, and had captured my imagination from childhood. So, I couldn't be more thrilled, and grateful to have had this particular site be my first Where solve. Can my first Who solve be far behind? All the best, Emily

Naturally, in my excitement, I reversed the historical facts! Washington stayed in the hotel in Washington Crossing, then went across the Delaware, landing in New Jersey, duh! I used to be a journalist, and reported on the re-enactment when "he" landed, and I was definiately standing on the New Jersey river bank! Sorry for the stupid goof. Thanks again, Emily

A couple of WTHAI updates:

Bond has been awarded a Gold Membership for his correct guess of "Gatun Locks" on the Panama Canal WhereTHAI.

Ku85jd has been awarded 100,000 points for a correct guess of "Francois Truffaut" (correctly spelled with forbidden cedilla =).

Congratulations!!

I love how WTHAI interescts with my life one way or another. It's aggravating when I see a face I know after it has been solved but today I was writing a quiz on music and literature and for the first time ever put the name Adorno down in print. So when I saw the subject of the day's WTHAI was his possessions it felt peculiar. I would never have known the answer, but I was amused by the coincidence.

Please can the points be credited to Lindyloo 12 who guessed it correctly first. (She had obviously used her 5 tries and had not entered it in the accepted Wiki format.

Thanks very much for posting the link, Larry, and congratulations on solving that stumper!

Sorry I haven't been around much this month to post links and commentary, but I'd like to thank all other WTHAI enthusiasts for their help!

Awhile back, on Sept. 19, there was a stumper -- Tigutorn Estonia. If you didn't see the puzzle, it took a little digging to find it, so here's a link: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Estonia08a_013.jpg

I discovered that Tigutorn means "snail tower," and that name is apt when you see the top of the tower, which was cropped out for the puzzle. There were two clues for this one: Northern Europe and NOT Scandinavia, and there were 129 incorrect guesses.

Congratulations to all of the winners for September!

Didn't we have Avicenna not long ago? I'd somehow never heard of him in my life until I encountered him in an amazing book I read right before my eye went flooey - the excellent "Year of Wonders" by Geraldine Brooks - and now he keeps popping up all over the place!
