DOG LOVERS UNTIE!

The story of the year here in Sioux City involves one Jake the
yellow lab. It is funny, sad, tragic and ironic all in one. I've
included a couple of links at the bottom (hope they work) if
anyone wants to follow it.

In a nutshell, the city council passed a vicious dog ordinance
that requires dogs that bite -- even if just once -- to be
euthanized. The ordinance was an attempt to control pitbulls.
Ironically, the first dog to be caught up in this mess was a
yellow lab owned by the councilman who proposed the
ordinance.

After running out of appeals Jake was set to be euthanized,
but last weekend he was dognaped from the local animal
shelter. The story has gotten even sillier since. I could go
downtown today and by a "Run Jake Run" t-shirt from
street vendors..

As I said, if you're interested, this story will be playing out
here for weeks.

Glad he was sprung! I'd like to think the reaction would have been the same had my now-deceased pit bull mix been in the pokey, but I know that wouldn't have been the case. For the record, unlike this yellow lab, she never bit anyone!

Sounds like the perfect plot for a Disney movie.

there are numerous sanctuaries that will take pit bulls and other dogs that some have deemed to be "vicious."

There are some dogs (not just pit bulls) that have been so badly abused that unfortunately there is no recourse but to put them down. They are so damaged they are ticking bombs.

But in many cases they can be saved. I don't know where it is, but there is a sanctuary in Canada that will take pit bulls.

My pit bull/chocolate Lab is the sweetest and smartest dog I've ever seen. But she does have a strong prey instinct and she goes nuts over squirrels or rabbits, sometimes birds. However, she never has made any attempt to bite anyone, even strangers who come in my yard.

I hope Jake will keep on running. Must not be much crime in Sioux City if they plan to investigate the dognapping.

One of the issues has been that once deemed vicious, the
dog can't leave town. It can't be given away. It can't be sent
to the country. It has to be put down.

Lots of people offered to take Jake. One fellow actually
bought him for $1 so that he could continue the appeal
process. Didn't get him off doggie death row.

Read the links, and never caught the details of the biting. What were the circumstances?
