JUSTIN - WHY THE HATED AND NAME CALLING?

Sadly, it is become apparent that Justin's (and other members) requests for Salty Dog
to take on a more polite and civil tone has fallen upon deaf ears. Why?

I have no issues with bringing creative and constructive "political" conversation to Salty Dog,
but, I do have issues with good threads being "invaded" by those who just come to "hate" or
to post their next "gotcha" moment.

Over time I have grown very weary with all the politically oriented name-calling and bad behavior
in Salty Dog. Why is it that so few are allowed to have such an intrusive impact?

Most who come to Salty Dog to exchange in political debate do so in a friendly and courteous
manner. Unfortunately there are a few (and by a few I mean 3-4) who essentially come to
"engage and enrage". Sploofus is a fun site (the exception being Salty Dog) with a lot of great
peeps who deserve better.

To those who may say "stay away from Salty Dog if it bothers you so", I say... Nope!

Myself and others who may feel as I do, paid to enjoy ALL aspects of Sploofus and we are
entitled to nothing less.

These topics are so important to Americans of all persuasions, that's it's no wonder we discuss them. I just wish we could be more civilized. And if we do participate in the political threads, why can't we read everyone's posts and links? If we're participating in the discussion, seems rude to refuse to listen to the other side.

And that is somehow more "mature" than name calling ? Perhaps we should all stop writing quizzes in case they offend anyone's sensitivities ? Then we can all sit here asking each other to pray for each other. Why don't the people that want to stifle free speech just not read the posts by people they object to, are you adults or what ? I didn't understand the "Internet Happy Box" in the last frame, but I went backward a couple of days which showed Pig explaining his invention. http://comics.com/pearls_before_swine/?DateAfter=2009-08-05&DateBefore=2009-08-12&Order=d.DateStrip+DESC&PerPage=1&Search=&x=48&y=14&Page=3

Basically (if the link doesn't work), the box is "just like the internet except that it's not hooked up to anything and you can't communicate with anyone and it's dark."

Thanks for starting this thread. Well said to the many of you. I hope more will speak up against the personal attacks, rude statements, and condescending, know-it-all comments.

For my part, I apologize for letting myself get dragged back into some of this. I had vowed to state out of it, and had for quite a while. Now, I find myself in need of reaffirming that vow. As much as I enjoy discussing politics, 99 percent of this is not a discussion, but a contest of competing rants from inflexible positions. Few, if any are changing their minds or accepting new ideas. Disagreement is frequently attacked on a personal level. It is not civil discourse.

It was noted above, and at other times, that if a person does not like the subject matter or author, they are free to not read the thread. That is true, but I do not see it as the point of this thread. No one is saying we should ban all discussion of politics, religion and sex. They are saying we should eliminate the personal attacks, rude comments and work to tone down the rhetoric.

I believe the intention of Sploofus is twofold. I see it first as a place where we can play games, create games, compete in friendly competition and learn stuff. and two, a place where we can make friends, build a family/community, share things and engage in polite discussion.

I do not believe it was created to be a place for flaming one another, personal bickering, puerile language, inflexible know-it-all puffery. There are hundreds, if not thousands of political, religious and sex-oriented BBSs on the Internet where this type of behavior is welcome, even relished.

Even though we like to think of this as 'our' house, and we should be able to behave as we wish, it is not 'our' house. It is Justin's. This is a big part of his livelihood and something he has invested ten times the time and effort into than the most avid Word Rounder, quiz writer or taker. It is not a bathroom wall. It is he, not us, who has the right to make and enforce the rules. It is us who have to accept these rules...nothing says we cannot ask for explanations or change...but accept at the end of the day.

I think it'd be easiest on everyone if when we break the Sploofus rules, Justin would write us personally (NOT an editor - some tend to stick up for each other).

Justin would personally put us on probation, and if it happens again, Justin would terminate our account. If it is only a few of us, I would think we are expendable to the site, and I think that would follow the letter of the rules of the site.

Dear Ravensclaw: Add my voice in support of your post, as I, too, have been really turned off by the tone and comments made by a few in Salty Dog. I am ashamed to admit that I am also one of those who has chosen not to participate in most of the threads (and almost all of the politically-oriented ones) because I want to avoid that kind of stuff. I truly admire your courage for speaking out, and even more for hanging in there despite those who practice to offend! Perhaps, by starting this thread folks will reflect on the nature of their posts before they make them, realizing that remarks that degenerate quickly into name-calling and worse are not only hurtful but also squelch the free speech of others. Bravo, Raven! All the best, Emily

I agree that it would be great if everyone would take it down a notch. Some of these threads have turned into big ole pots of stress. None of us needs that.

At the very least it would be nice if people would stop injecting political diatribes into nonpolitical threads. Some days it seems half the threads have been polluted.

This is not the town square, it is Justin's house. There are MANY examples of the first amendment having limitations. One of them is you cannot just walk into someones house and start ranting or talking in a way not welcome. Justin has every right to set limits on what can and cannot be said here. He also has ever right to ask or make people who violate the decorum of the BBS to stop it, or leave. He has been very lenient in this. Many of us, in turn, have abused that leniency. The only time I can remember Justin kicking someone out is THEDON. Other than that, the only boots have been to cheaters. He has put up with a lot of abuse from people on these boards, and probably worse in private. It is to his credit he has not dropped the hammer sooner and harder.

Justin depends on people paying for memberships to pay for the operations of this site, and probably more. This is just my guess from what I know from some friends about the costs of running a website that requires housing servers, but I estimate Justin probably pays at least $750US a month, maybe a $1000US to keep Sploofus running. That is around ten grand per year. People find and come to Sploofus looking for trivia and word games. They do not come her looking for a BBS to rant and rave, flame back and forth on political topics of the day. There are a zillion other places they can do that. Justin is hoping the new people will like the place enough to join to play the games, and maybe make a few new friends. He is hoping current members will stay. All this political firestorming is doing nothing to bring in new paying members, and everything to drive them away. If Justin wants to set limits on behaviors he feels are counterproductive to the site, I say more power to him.

There are two things offered here, two things bought and paid for: games, and discussion boards. I pay for both, and I use both. I have real-life friends and family here, so I care a lot about community, and to me, part of a functioning community is open, civil discussion of pretty much anything that is on the public radar, and I'm not talking about “free speech.” I know this is Justin's house, I have total respect for that and I've always agreed with and supported language controls - yes to reasonable limitations on profanity and sex talk.

I'm also sensitive to the financial vulnerability of the site, and I support it monetarily by gifting and referring people who upgrade, and personally by being communicative and friendly with a LOT more people than the few repeaters I routinely clash with in Salty Dog. I love Sploofus in spite of some rough ups and downs, and I think I do my share. It’s true I could write more quizzes.

I could keep a more civil tongue in my head, and gladly. My first inclination is to be open and friendly as a puppy and I would like to get along with everyone, but I am reactive, and if you jab me I might jab back, and after the hundredth jab I'm going to be short of patience, possibly a mite tetchy. Frankly, I think I’ve exercised unusual restraint.

There was always banter and give and take here, and minor disagreements could be had and gotten past, but until the past several months or so the jabs were mostly good-natured, and I know they're not that anymore. I can tell the difference. Yeah, I do say things for effect, make wild contrasts to make points, get carried away with rhetoric. It's because I care with all my heart and soul about what I'm saying (there are people who love that about me). I've tried to characterize ideas and behavior instead of people. I see a difference between "that’s an insane idea" and "you are insane." I can say to a friend or a casual acquaintance in a friendly debate "That's nuts" and they don't think I'm saying "You're nuts" and get mad at me. We could go back to that here.

I can't remember actually starting a political thread until the Palin Death Panel thread the other day, not since the election, anyway, and I doubt I’ll be starting many more. But I've participated in many started by others as patiently and reasonably (if not always as tactfully) as I can, and I intend to continue to do so as long as threads are posted about topics in which I have an interest, and about which I have something to say. If they’re going to be here, I’m going to be in them, and if I transgress administration can delete me and if Justin thinks me a detriment to the site he has but to say so and he wouldn’t even have to bother with the boot.

I don't believe you are one of "the few" that provoked this thread, Smoke. As far as I'm concerned you are a paragon of tact and patience. If everyone showed such restraint, the world--and certainly this board--would be a fah, fah better place...

I always liked this definition of "tact": to make one's point without piercing the skin.

I think a remark like that, with its implied sneer and faint whiff of condescension, might earn you a punch in the nose if you were gasbagging in some bar somewhere, but it is out of place here. Your belief in your freedom of speech is as touching as other people's belief in the gods you disdain. You're free to speak, but don't assume that it's someone else's responsibility to provide you with a megaphone. The owner of the megaphone has tried to give some idea of what he expects. Action! There's a good word. Not sarcasm, blaming, and taking a victim stance. "You're so mean to us but we're powerless, please stop!" No no no.

Can't we DO some things to change this problem? Write uplifting quizzes, use good icons, leave a LOT more positive comments, give better ratings, leave hugs and congrats, start interesting threads. If you don't like what someone is saying, do not respond, get into bickering, or add fuel to the fire. Angry people love that. I see the "nice" people consistently getting into what could easily be called a nasty tone. Instead, take actions that reflect what you want Sploofus to become. How about seeking out quizzes of people who are new, or those you usually overlook? How about posting in the Quiz Requests thread for quizzes that Shoulda Got an EA. If you want this to become a generous, safe, caring, encouraging millieu...you have to be that.

For people you find unpleasant or rigid or always seeking to fight, ignore them. Ignore their quizzes, ignore their comments, if they hijack your thread, start another one. Walking away from the unpleasant isn't giving up, or losing ground. It's strength. It's a clear message: I'm not interested.

Whereas SAYING "I'm not interested" but jumping in there every single time with all your own bickering....

Try taking your power: take lots of actions that are uplifting,

Tuzilla (Steve)...while it is "Justin's Place", some of us pay for it, so technically, that makes us the lien holder. If me dropping the "f" bomb every now and then offends someone and my post gets deleted, why aren't posts that offends me deleted? The whole thing is BS (I'd spell that out too, but then all of this eloquent prose would go to waste).

Not sure what the word 'partisan' means in this context ... but I don't have a problem reading a well-written point of view by anyone, it's a way of learning and looking at things another way which I think is good for all of us. Some posts are well-written and informative, some are not.

I can skim through replies and move on, but it's a personal choice, not for me to tell others what to do. For me, sticking with only those I agree with is like 'intellectual incest'. I don't spend a lot of energy, though, on slogans, sound bites, and disjointed copy/paste blitzes. That's just me.

I do enjoy Felix's humor, it can diffuse the tension and put some perspective back in the dialogue.

At the moment, there's really just one member on here that comes across as really hateful and in your face. I have long since quit reading anything posted by them because its all just typed diarrhea.

Justin - please install a flush handle on Sploofus.

My ex was an alcoholic and he too was always derogatory and demeaning. Maybe that explains a lot.

Its not you, CC, if that's what you mean.

That doesn't mean I don't want to pinch you until it leaves a big purple welt, from time to time.

Well shoot. You'll have to clue me in on some acceptable form of punishment that isn't so delightful.

Get your people to call my people OK ? I have lots of "unwelted" areas just waiting to be "welted".

LOL Great come back and I honestly mean that. Reminds me of a quote from my favorite British person....Winston Churchill. He definitely had a command of the English language and used it perfectly in every circumstance. Peace.
