HEALTH CARE POLL

Several threads in here are long on talk, short on answers. Please take this poll without adding comments, except where asked in Question 10. Please do not add other comments to the thread. 1. (Strictly for demographics) Is your primary residence inside the United States?

YES

2. What is your opinion of the current health care system in the United States?

IT IS ABOVE AVERAGE (I’d really have chosen AVERAGE)

3. Is the U.S. health care system in need of an overhaul?

YES, A MAJOR OVERHAUL

4. Should everyone in America have health care coverage, even if they cannot pay for it directly?

YES, BUT IT SHOULD ONLY COVER THE BASICS (though I’d define that quite liberally—so to speak )

5. Should Health Care benefits should be taxed?

NO (although I could see very limited instances in which it might make sense for upper-income people)

6. Are Tax-free medical savings account are a great idea?

PROBABLY NOT, POOR AND LOW INCOME PEOPLE WILL NEVER HAVE THE MONEY TO PROPERLY USE THEM (depends on what the overall system looks like; they could be very useful to some people)

7. My family has all the health care coverage we need.

YES, MY COVERAGE IS GREAT (OK, not great, but decent; the issue would be if I ever were unemployed—then healthcare coverage would be a nightmare)

8. Is health care in the U.S. is too expensive?

YES

9. How do you think the U.S. health care system rates again other industrialized nations?

GOOD, THERE IS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT (the actual care is decent for people with coverage/who can afford it; the insurance system is a nightmare, as is the quality of care for the poorest)

10. Are the overhaul plans of President Obama are going in the right direct?

YES (we cannot keep going without any solution; it’s time to actually DO something)

I just can't let this one go. I don't believe it needs an overhaul, but I think it does need work, so the only way I can honestly answer is between 2 and 3.

4. Should everyone in America have health care coverage, even if they cannot pay for it directly?

NO, ONLY CITIZENS AND LEGAL IMMIGRANTS SHOULD BE PROVIDED COVERAGE

5. Should Health Care benefits should be taxed?

6. Are Tax-free medical savings account a great idea?

7. My family has all the health care coverage we need.

YES, MY COVERAGE IS GREAT (but I've been without before)

8. Is health care in the U.S. is too expensive?

9. How do you think the U.S. health care system rates again other industrialized nations?

GREAT, IT IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD

10. Are the overhaul plans of President Obama are going in the right direction?

NO

Instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, just fix what needs fixing - don't screw up everything that DOES work well.

1. Insurance companies should not be allowed to refuse coverage to anyone, pre-existing condition or not
2. Tort reform - now THIS needs a MAJOR overhaul. Now. (rather than healthcare).
3. Use part of the 85%-90% unused stimulus money to set up a health savings account for everyone who makes less than
$25,000 a year who does not have insurance. Use the rest of the stimulus money to pay back down the debt.
4. LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE to choose their own healthcare - or if they don't want healthcare. (For accidents, all are
already required to have accident insurance on car and property and business)
5. No illegal aliens will receive free healthcare - period. If the illegal alien drain on healthcare in California had never
been allowed, a great deal of California's economic woes wouldn't exist. I've personally seen one Texas city practically
ruined by the illegal aliens sucking the life out of it, draining the healthcare system and school free food programs. If
they're going to be here illegally, they should pay for their own food and healthcare. No other country on earth
supports illegal aliens like we do. As soon as anyone goes through the process to become a legal citizen, all benefits then apply.

I would by far rather leave it as it is, with all its flaws, than give the federal government more/total control of our healthcare. Two wrongs could bankrupt this country. If there's no money - THERE'S NO MONEY.

Our primary health care to citizens is based on employer provided coverage. It had worked well for many decades, but the pricing structure is causing many employers to drastically alter or even drop their coverage. Also, our system [driven by insurance companies] has created too much cost-shifting, discriminatory practices, and is becoming too unaffordable. As workers lose their jobs that once provided decent coverage, they are facing the reality of being un or under-insured.
The current trends are un-sustainable. We need overhaul.

1. (Strictly for demographics) Is your primary residence inside the United States?

YES

2. What is your opinion of the current health care system in the United States?

IT IS HORRIBLE [people suffering and dying in this country for lack of care is a national disgrace]

3. Is the U.S. health care system in need of an overhaul?

YES, A MAJOR OVERHAUL [overhauled until it covers every citizen fully - no exceptions]

4. Should everyone in America have health care coverage, even if they cannot pay for it directly?

NO, ONLY CITIZENS AND LEGAL IMMIGRANTS SHOULD BE PROVIDED [complete] COVERAGE [emergency care to aliens as needed for an affordable basic fee]

5. Should Health Care benefits should be taxed?

NO[t sure]

6. Are Tax-free medical savings account are a great idea?

MOSTLY NOT, POOR AND LOW INCOME PEOPLE WILL NEVER HAVE THE MONEY TO PROPERLY USE THEM

7. My family has all the health care coverage we need.

NO, IT DOES NOT COVER NEARLY WHAT I NEED COVERED [we pay more than 1/4 of our income for coverage, with such a high deductible we are still $900 shy at mid-August, and barring something serious probably won't meet it - again - this year. Today's visit to the ophthalmologist cost over $200 out of pocket; our HSA was matched by the employer last year but they dropped the match this year, so our two monthly office visits and our individual generic prescriptions keep the account drained and the card was refused for payment today, leaving me to pay from the household budget, and flat broke for the rest of the month. So, no, not nearly enough, and it seems a high price for little more than catastrophic care.]

8. Is health care in the U.S. is too expensive?

YES!

9. How do you think the U.S. health care system rates again other industrialized nations?

THIRTY-SEVENTH

10. Are the overhaul plans of President Obama are going in the right direct?

YES

IT IS HORRIBLE IT’S #37 (People with and without insurance are dying in the world’s most powerful country because insurance companies dictate to doctors what they can and cannot do e.g. profit over people) prides itself on its exceptionally and greatness tolerates

3. Is the U.S. health care system in need of an overhaul?

10. Are the overhaul plans of President Obama are going in the right direct?

YES
NO (But if you answered YES to Question 3, please write a brief paragraph below this with your ideas of how you would overhaul the system.)
My Objections…
• Do you worry at all what will happen to your coverage if your company stops offering it? Can you afford a $14,000 a year premium to cover your family?
• Many people can’t afford health insurance, on average it costs more per month than the average mortgage payment, or rent.
• Getting double digit increases to your health insurance plan: means
less salary/wages because your employer has to pay more for health insurance every year:
• It’s not a bad thing for individuals to discuss living wills and end of life care with their doctor. PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO DIE IN DIGNITY. What about those who are comatose or have no family to rely on.
• It is good thing that you pay higher insurance premiums to efficiently subsidize the uninsured and its Christian .You know love thy neighbor as thy self.
Our country has worse mortality and morbidity compared to every other industrialized country.

• It’s not a good thing that the “free market” charges 20% to 40% for administration/overhead while Medicare does it more efficiently for 3%-5.
Socialized medicine is a good thing, for Veterans Administration the health care system in the VA is 100% socialized medicine in the US.

• If the “free market “is so good, why are people with pre-existing conditions not getting affordable coverage?

• The federal deficit, should bother people to know that health care costs cost 16% of GDP, and will be 20% of GDP in just 8 short years.
• The “free market” and competition, are you aware that health insurance companies are exempt from the Sherman Anti-Trust act, and therefore CAN collude, and CAN have monopolies?
• Many people don’t know this government rations care, are people aware that the “free market” currently forces patients to wait for results on cancer biopsies and cancer treatments?
• That is not the best possible care to have to wait for cancer treatments? Do you realize that care is rationed now and people have died as a result?

Our problems are often money-related. Cost are out of control. Most people cannot access the system because of money, not availability. More and more companies are dropping coverage. Some type of compromise need to reached between out of control lawsuits and juries and the ability to hold drug makers, health care providers, etc. accountable for their errors. I think all citizens and legal immigrants should have basic coverage...it does not have to be from the government, but it should be a non-profit system operating on the concept of providing service and controlling costs, not making profits for investors off the illness of others. Additional coverage should be available from insurance companies, much the way current medicare supplemental programs are offered. Taxing only the "Cadillac" level benefits is not unreasonable.

Since looks like the poll is over and we are into poking"fun" that want nothing to do with the plans out there. He is not Beck but certainly makes sense to me http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/08/14/the_preventive_care_myth_97889.html without some kind of tort reform there is no reform. Lawyer lobby standing in the way here. Currently my insurance is good because doctors and hospitals take Medicare Advantage. Good luck getting a primary care physician if you only have Medicare or Medicaid who do not pay docs enough to make it worth taking them as patients. I turn the channel now when he is making yet another campaign speech. If you cut the illegal aliens off and ditch the lawyer lobby smarter people than me can figure this out.

Steve, that's a pretty good analysis.

I will take issue with the idea that costs are spiraling out of control. Half of the cost increases are related to real improvements in care.

And non-profit? How?

JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING JANK0614 SAID PLUS:
1. Significant limiting of law suits, especially those where the lawyer makes out better than the plaintive.
2. Access across state lines for insurance
3. Elimination of duplicate paperwork
4. Pay the Doctor more ... lots more and pay the lawyers almost zero. Use arbitration rather than run away juries. She/he earns 9% of the fees.
5. Extend the life of patents
6. Get the Government out of most of the insurance. Let them pay for Medicaid. Raise the income max for eligibility and provide payments for catastrophic events. Take over cash payments to hospital emergency rooms to illegal aliens and export them after stabilization.
7. Put all government employees, especially law makers, on social security and what the public gets for health care.
8. Elect the most qualified not the most senior to Congressional committee chairmanships.
9. Require bills to address only one subject per bill. Make Congress vote on just that bill ... not an amalgmation of ear marks and back scratching.
10. Post all bils on the internet before conssideration on the floors.

Steve, I just saw your post. good one. I agree that Congressional reform is barely a health care issue but ...
I hope a large number of bad representatives are not re-elected. Particularly the ones that don't bother to read what they are voting for. If it has to so complicated than don't write it. Make it so simple, the folks that have to obey the law can understand it on the first read.

10. Are the overhaul plans of President Obama are going in the right direct?

UNDECIDED: Sorry... the whole thing is so complicated that I'm still trying to figure it all out.

I do believe that health insurance companies are lining their pockets at the expense of people like me who can't afford to be ripped off. Doctors are being told what procedures they can do and in what order to do them by those same insurance companies. While I am a person who firmly believes that the government is way too big already, I am not entirely opposed to a national health care program. Most industrialized nations have them. Why not us?

I DO believe that by not having your health insurance tied to your employer that a lot of people who work where they do only for the insurance benefits may be propelled into entrepreneurship. Now, wouldn't THAT be cool?

And, for those of us who have opted for entrepreneurship who don't have insurance ... we would have an option if there was a national policy. Now, wouldn't THAT be cool?

So, I'm not sure that President Obama's health care plan is what it needs to be, but I am not opposed to the concept in general.

4. Should everyone in America have health care coverage, even if they cannot pay for it directly?

NO, ONLY CITIZENS AND LEGAL IMMIGRANTS SHOULD BE PROVIDED COVERAGE ( but ALL children under 16 should have coverage)

5. Should Health Care benefits be taxed?

YES, BUT ONLY ON THE MOST DELUXE PLANS

6. Are Tax-free medical savings account are a great idea?

YES, SIGN ME UP (I definitely would have signed up when I was still working)

7. My family has all the health care coverage we need.

SORT OF, IT COULD BE BETTER

8. Is health care in the U.S. too expensive?

YES

9. How do you think the U.S. health care system rates again other industrialized nations?

GREAT, IT IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD (but even great can be improved)

10. Are the overhaul plans of President Obama are going in the right direct?

NO (But if you answered YES to Question 3, please write a brief paragraph below this with your ideas of how you would overhaul the system.)

My main concerns have been:
1. This is being pushed through too quickly. There needed to be more time for study and fact gathering. I'm concerned things are being pushed along to meet the president's agenda - not to improve the system. "Act in haste, repent in leisure."

2. The wording is difficult to understand so few have made the effort to wade through the pages and pages of gobbledygook..

3. The government is gaining too much control over what doctors can and cannot do.

4. I would rather see the government put forth more effort into catching all the fraud in medical field and Medicare.

5. I believe one of the reasons the U.S. ranks so low among other nations in healthcare and mortality rates is because in the U.S. babies are saved at birth that in other countries probably would not have survived. Same with the elderly. Science has made it possible to keep people alive perhaps longer than they should.
