I'm dying to know a little Sploofus History. It would be an interesting addition to our website. I joined just as the teams were disbanding. Any oldtimers out there care to fill us in on the early Sploofus days?

What were the teams about? There were no teams when I joined.

I only joined back in October of 2005, apparently more recently than you, as I have only heard about the teams from posts such as these. Here is a link to a very short article about Justin and Sploofus:

I joined in June 2004, and the teams came and went since then.
A good idea initially - like souls teamed up - either by nationality, subject interest, prowess, whatever.
There was a team name and scores were totalled and summarised by teams.
Started off as good fun.
But some idiots started taking it all far too seriously, even to the extent of ganging up on other teams' authors to down-score their quizzes, etc. It all got rather silly.
Sadly but rightly, Justin decided to scrap 'em.
It would be good to have the teams back if the silliness could be avoided in some way.

I agree with Surreyman. Teams were fun, but individuals ruined it. People would write a quiz and all their teammates would immediately pop in and score it a 9, even if it was just T&F, 2+2=, or pick the green vegetable from lettuce, apple, steak, milk, dump truck. Then they would see a quiz of a competitor, perhaps a great quiz that could earn an EA today, and they would bomb it with a 1. Also, back then, the quiz writer only received 100 points for writing a quiz, nothing per take like today.

It would be nice to have teams back, if they could be on a friendly, competitive basis. But I am not sure how to accomplish that task.

When did Sploofus start? Who were the first members?

Go into the leaderboards and fine out who is at the top Level - they would be the ones that have probably been around the longest - send them an email and ask them anything specific you might want to know - or just send an email to Justin - the creator.

If I'm not mistaken Sploofus started in 2004...I joined in September of that year.....I think that Alan (surreyman) has been here since the beginning. I enjoyed the teams we had also but a handful of people ruined it for everyone else. I'd love to see them come back but I honestly don't see that happening. Seen alot of changes both good and bad since then...but I'm still hanging on......

Vickie and I joined at the same time. Surreyman was here and there were some others here that still are but with different usernames now. I agree about the teams - it was fun but somehow it started to get a little out of control. I think Sploofus is better today without them. Steve, Vickie and I were all on the same team, are there any other Divas left out there?

I remember when we first starting getting points for taking a quiz - woohoo what a rush!

I don't think I was in at the start - I found the site by Googling around and it was already up and running.
I joined in June 2004 which, I now realise, was pretty close to the start.
Justin can presumably match-in the dates of the earliest members still with us.
Would be interesting to know!

I thought I had heard somewhere that when the site first began it was ONLY TQOTD. Writing quizzes came later. Word Rounds after that, and then word puzzles even later.

I came in Jan '05 and after taking and writing a few quizzes was asked to join a team. They died out just a couple of months later. That was also in the days when quiz writing could be anything and people would write quizzes about "The Players on My Team" which pretty much only team members would know.

There were less than 2000 members when I joined, and less than 100 quizzes in about 4 categories (Arts, Technology, Religion and something else). I made it my personal goal to get them all up over 100

We might moan sometimes about the editors now, but you should have seen the utter rubbish that appeared when quizzes were just written and posted!
Editing is the best thing that ever happened to this site.

I agree with Alan on the editing even though I do get frustrated at times......LOL......I do miss the commradiery we had with the teams least we don't have any more true or false quizzes on here! LOL.......

I joined up July 04, just after Alan and have seen many fine people come and go, anyone else remember netman, vasdeferens, dariana, gassygranny, covenant et al, not to mention one wengeruk who would surely have a score of around 3000 trillion by now if he'd stuck around!

The teams were indeed fun but as has been mentioned, a nippy majority spoilt it for the rest - but they definitely had to go.

I also remember (and I feel really old saying this!) my first ever word round win, round number 15 with a lightning quick 37.4 secs - incidentally I came second in that round too!

Ah the memories!

Progress is good though and much as I loved Sploofus then, it's even better now!

Sploofus is great since I joined. Never before have I been able to use the words 'gastropod', 'mollusk', and 'crystaline' in the same sentence before.
