They are still doing more test and she is scheduled for an ultra sound of her heart this morning. If this doesn't show anything then they are talking about checking the backside of her heart for any damage or if there is a hole there. They are drawing blood q2hrs right now as she is on coumadin and they are trying to wean her off of it. The doctors are talking about putting her on Arixtra instead. One of her doctor's suspects aortic valve regurgitation (you nurses here will know what this means) in layman's terms the flap that open and closes to help the regulation of blood flow from backing up into her heart isn't shutting properly. According to her son, they said that to fix this she would have to have a stroke...For some reason this doesn't sound right to me and I've been poring over my nursing books this morning trying to find out about this. so far I haven't found very much. then again my nursing books are over 20 years old! The doctors are also talking about putting in a filter to stop the blood clots from traveling. If any of you nurses here on the island have any cardiac experience please pm me. I'd really like to hear your take on this...Thanks again everyone for the prayers. They are very much appreciated. I'll let you all know more when I hear something...have a great day my FAMILY!!!!

Thanks, Vickie, for the update!

I hope everything goes well for Eva, and they find a solution as to what is the matter with her and she can come home soon.

In my prayers too!
I would think that if she DOESN'T have it fixed, she could have a stroke. The blood tends to backwash instead of moving forward. This stagnant blood can form a clot, which can travel to lungs, brain etc.
But my background is ER, not cardiac surgery, hopefully you will get better answer.

My mom had her valves replaced in her heart at Univ. Wis Madison. The valves were defective and she had a series of mini strokes. Sounds like something similar to your sister in law. They will figure it out hopefully, all my prayers are with you and your family.

Wish I had knowledge in this area. I'm praying for her and that the medical folks will figure this out quickly and get her the right treatment.
