On Tuesday, I am going to run a word puzzle that basically is an extension of the "WWII Info" puzzle and the supplemental Salty Dog posts. The word puzzle will be a mini-biography of a person whom I have met. After the puzzle ends, I will post all of the phrases and write a fuller biographical sketch of the person.

If the first puzzle generates positive response, I'd like to run a second round, tweaking things before opening up this idea as a new community word puzzle theme.

I think this could be a rich new vein of interesting word puzzles for us (Big thank you to Sploofunky for coming up with the idea!), but want to run the test first to see if it comes together as well as we hope.

Sounds good...I will look forward to it.

Great idea.

I think the first WWII puzzle generated one of the best threads Salty Dog has produced. I'd love to hear more.

Having said that I'm not yet sure how the basic theme mentioned above could be extrapolated but I look forward to finding out how!

It does have some built in challenges as I'm quickly discovering as I start in earnest transferring the idea from my head to the actual puzzle. The first of which is coming up with a title that suggests it's different from a regular wp and conveys a bit of info about the subject and who the wp author is. Tough to get in 30 characters/spaces.

Of course, the random nature of the phrases is a drawback, too, but I'm hoping that maybe it will also be a lure for people to come back and read the full story after the puzzle ends.

Sounds interesting! I'll look forward to it.
Kudos for your creativity.

Sounds like an intriguing idea, hopefully all the words will be pointing in the right direction too.

Yes, that was a wonderful thread after the last WP on this subject, and a great WP that started it all. And I'm willing to try anything on WP.

But I'm a little concerned that you may disappoint a lot of folks because of the "random nature of the phrases." That aspect can be pretty frustrating. (I still remember being frustrated when a WP, describing the writer's random day at the library, mentioned a person with penguins on their sunglasses.) Don't want to discourage from telling a great story, but I'm wondering if putting it into a WP is like putting a square peg in a round hole.

Good point, especially since the library one was one of my puzzles. But in the never ending battle to keep the word puzzle supply going you got to try all kinds of things. Some work, some don't and some are somewhere in between. Like the puzzle running at the moment - I actually was going to do this biography idea in that slot, but hadn't worked through stuff enough, so I decided to give myself more time by moving it back. Course, that means coming up with something quickly to take it's place. I felt it was okay-ish, but not as good as my last few...

Okay-ish, I should say except for my typo. Very sorry about that! Never type late at night on a full dose of benedryl. Darn hay-fever season!

Sploofishy, sorry about the crack about the library WP! That's embarrassing! I must have been in a bad mood the day I took it. Yeah, that's the ticket.

You and all of the editors have my total appreciation for your efforts to keep the WPs coming. And you're right that they can't all be perfect. (I've contributed a few of the non-perfect ones myself!) So go for it, and ignore the whiners like me! The WP takers are all in the same boat (assuming the ten puzzles are fairly balanced in terms of difficulty).

No problems, Dave, trust me, I have a very thick skin about stuff I've written, and it was a totally fair assessment.

Sounds like an interesting idea.
Dave you just made my evening. Boy did you put your foot in your mouth. Lol And watching you try to get it back out again was even funnier. The editor didn't seem seriously hurt though. Wow, who would take that job on? Did someone say they do it for FREE?

Sploofishy -- this is a great idea -- I'm looking forward to it. There's so much to work with, I know you'll bring substance to the WP.

I find it frustrating that DAVEGUTH complains about
the content of a WP!!!!
There he is - always at or near the top of the list....
And I'm usually near the middle....

I vote that Dave and Virtus - and a few other people
who regularly top the list - be banned from whining
about anything....

Just to clarify something here--I've near seen one single whine from Ann (Virtus), so you really don't need to include her in your edict. Now, Garrybl on the other hand...

Though my comments have always been attempts to help folks improve future WPs, I understand your point. So in the spirit of Archie Bunker and Meathead, I'll try to "stiffle" myself.

Please do not stifle yourself. Lord knows it's refreshing to see talk here not only relevant to the site, but also aimed at improving it.
