"Here Spot! Here kitty, kitty, kitty!"

This new theme revolves around pets -- specifically, the names of pets, but with a bit of a twist.

Here's how everything will work:

1. CLUES: Your clues will be the names of pets. You can use the names of any pets you want -- pets you have now or have had; pets of friends and neighbors; favorite pets from fiction, movies, TV, etc.

2. PHRASES: Write phrases that contain general trivia related to the names, but NOT related to the pets. That's the twist!

Let's say you want to use your pet Midnight's name as a clue:

Clue 1: Midnight
Phrase 1: the first word of an oscar winning movie

Let's say you want to use the name of a fictional pet as a clue:

Clue 2: Spot
Phrase 2: a carpet stain or a popular place to gather

NOTE: Don't worry if a fellow player uses a name that you want to. Just be sure to associate the name with different trivia.

3. TITLES: There's some flexibility here. If your clues name your own pets, your title could be USERID's Meet My Pets. If your clues name some of your own pets and some pets from books and movies, your title could be USERID's Petpourri. Just be sure to get the word "pet" in the title, so we know it's a community word puzzle.

4. After your word puzzle has ended, we invite you to tell the community all about the pets you choose for your puzzle -- what types of animals your pets are, what books or movies the names come from, and so on.

For example, Midnight was a black guinea pig and Spot is Data's humorously named cat on "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

How do you submit your word puzzles? Just like you always do -- via the PM link to your word puzzle editor.

Please remember to write 10 clues and 10 phrases. For further tips, you can consult the Revised Guide to Word Puzzle Authoring in Hotwire:

Your word puzzle editor is also available to help you.

Hot diggity dog! We hope you'll find this practically purrfect in every way and look forward to your submissions!

If you're new to Sploofus or new to Platinum, the Community Word Puzzle program is something we dreamed up for fun and as a way to get to know each other better.

We invite and encourage all Platinum members to participate. If you haven't written a word puzzle yet, this is a great way to get started.

Our first theme, "10 Things About Me," has been a great success, spawning creative alternatives, such as 10 Things About Famous Person, Fictional Character, etc. That theme is still ongoing, and you can find information about it here:

We'll be working on bringing you more community word puzzle themes in the future!

When you say 'pets'....

Do you just mean animals?

To take two extremes; a giant squid in 20000 leagues under the sea would not be a pet. But a rabbit in the curse of the giant were-rabbit might be? Even if noone owned him as a pet his breed is a pet.

Let's just put it this way. If you think a giant squid is a pet and you use that as a clue, Barry will complain.

Barry..have you ever even had a pet? Most pets ARE animals although I can honestly see you having a pet rock or a pet haggis. I'm sure the editors will get back to you on that.

This sounds like a lot of fun - kudos to the mind behind this idea.
And I think a giant squid is a fine idea for a pet

Seriously. Will any animal in fiction do?
As someone who only ever owned a goldfish -- which never had time to get named -- I'd be at a disdvantage if i had to stick to other people's pets. There is alimited number of them -- but not of animals in fiction/art/music.
But 'a pet' is far more restrictive than 'an animal' big or small so I'd like clarification please.

Oh pets!! This one is made for me!

Barry, I think you're trying to make this too hard! A pet would typically be a cat, dog, hamster, rabbit, horse, etc. Something that is domesticated.

According to the Compact Oxford English Dictionary, a pet is "a domestic or tamed animal or bird kept for companionship or pleasure." Not sure why they felt the need to specify birds, but I think the answer is clear: you should probably limit your real or fictional pets to any animal that a sane person would keep and care for. I'm thinking giant squids and were-rabbits don't fall into this category.

Barry -- We are discussing this and will get back to you shortly. We do want to give players as much latitude as possible with this theme, and we're in favor of anything that fosters creativity and fun. For example, we are considering the possibility that the DC Comics character Aquaman or the god Neptune might have considered a giant squid a pet.

Now wait just a minute. I've had pet flying squirrels - they definitely weren't domesticated - they unraveled my drapes and used them for nesting material. I've also had a pet skunk. Does Clyde count? He was the worst pet ever!!

If you do not have a lot of personal experience with pets, you are not restricted to fictional pets. You can use pets in memoirs, biographies, celebrity pets, pets of historical figures, and so on.

We are delighted to see such early enthusiasm and look forward to your puzzles!

Just trying to define boundaries here.

In the unlikely event I decided to write about Clytymnestra Captain Nemo's pet giant squid (OK I made that up).

Could I do the clue in the form of:

Clue: Captain Nemo's Giant squid
Phrase: Clytymnestra was X YZ

Or does it have to be:

Clue: Clytymnestra
Mother of Oedipus, she XYZ

If those were her chromosomes, that would explain a lot.

And wasn't it Jocasta?

To provide some clarification:

The pets can be any type of animal. They do not have to be domesticated. They do not even have to be organic, i.e. if you have a robotic hamster that you think of as a pet, that's fine.

Barry -- Please refer to the very first post and the second example. If Captain Nemo had a giant pet squid named Clytemnestra, then your clue would be Clytemnestra.

Your phrase can contain any general trivia related to that name.

Please feel free to be as creative as you want with your phrases within the outlined framework. If you want to incorporate wordplay along with general trivia in your phrases, that's fine.

The idea here is to combine the personal (names of pets you're familiar with in some way) with real trivia around a theme that everyone can relate to, even if you've never had a pet yourself.

We hope that helps! Have fun writing!

What's in a Pet's Name?

A note to word puzzle players: With this framework, you might think of yourselves as detectives. From the names, can you guess what pets a WP author chose from literature, movies, songs, history, etc.?

Or if the WP features an author's pets, can you guess the types of animals from the names?

Salzypat  (Level: 161.6 - Posts: 5414)

There is not a deadline on submitting a WP is there? So some of the first ones submitted might be published before some of the last ones are written. If anyone has a question about how to write a WP on this topic, maybe they could wait and read some of the first ones.

Can we submit more than one?

Don't worry, an example is on its way. Our brave Sploofunky has one debuting this Friday!

It'll all be much clearer after that I think.

Anyway, we hope to launch several topics over the next few weeks to make sure we have plenty of variety, also lots of ideas to help potential word puzzle authors come up with some fun puzzles.

Hot diggity-dog!!
I think I can do this......I have not submitted a Platipuzzle in quite some time, and love critters: how good is this!?

Now let me get this straight:
If I think of a pet ginger cat named "Marmalade", I could do thusly:
"A jam or conserve made with citrus fruits that is great on breakfast toast".....Clue: Marmalade.

If I think of long-gone black dog named "Shadow", I could write:
"I follow you around on a sunny day" Clue: "Shadow"

Does that sound like I'm on track?

Cheers, Bev

Yes, Bushyfox, you are precisely on track! Those are excellent examples.

The only requirements for this Community WP theme are:

1. Use the names of pets as your clues. Any pets -- your own, those of friends, relatives, neighbors; those belonging to historical figures; celebrity pets; fictional pets, and so on.

2. Write some general trivia related to the name as your phrase. We invite you to be as creative as you want within the framework described.

3. Include the word "pet" in your title.

Salzypat is the first Platipuzzler to take the plunge with this new theme. Her word puzzle will begin Saturday at 8 p.m. Sploofus time.

Just a reminder: Don't worry if another author uses the name of a pet that you want to. I used the name "Harry" this morning, for example. If you want to use that name as a clue, please go right ahead.

A note: If you happen to have a hamster named "Hamster," then you would use "Hamster" as a clue.

If you happen to have a horse named "Parakeet," then you would use "Parakeet" as a clue.

Salzypat gave us "Meet My Pets" on Saturday evening. Be sure to check out the stories behind her pets' names:

It's time now for some more notes!

+ BUSHYFOX's Petpourri WP is running now.

+ Remember that Platinum members can team up to write WPs, so please feel free to grab a friend and write a pet-themed community WP together.

+ We've had some questions, so I'll try to provide some clarification. Your clues (names of pets) need to be spelled as they're really spelled. Then you can be as creative as you want with your phrases, including using wordplay.

+ Clues can contain more than one name: If your pet is named Henry Edward Rupert III, for example, you can certainly use that as your clue.

We hope that helps, and have fun writing!

This is just a reminder that if you decide to write a pet-themed WP using the format outlined in the original announcement, you can use a selection of any 10 pets' names you want. They do not have to be your pets. So far, we have had Garrybl's Cartoon Pets, for example, and Bigbird's Sesame Street Pets. Bbear and Haydn's word puzzle included the names of some of their own pets along with the names of friends' pets.

In addition, you can write a variation on the original theme. Please see this thread for more information:

Thank you, and have fun writing!

This thread is hysterical! Especially at the beginning after the serious start, and fueled by Barry. Reminds me of the chain letter about an attempt to have a "holiday" party, that disintegrates! Happily this didn't and lots of good quizzes ensued. Do I gather it's still ok to send one of these in?
