It USED to be when it was in used to list quizzes that folks had found outstanding or enjoyed a buch. When you get a definitive answer, Felix, ask what is the function of Trivial Tangents and Quiz Requests

Also ask you asks questions on 'Ask the Audience" or post on the Newbie' forum that is if they expect to ge an answer or be noticed

Oops, thought Felix was asking a serious question and I gave a serious answer. Pardon my post and perhaps an editor will do me the favor of removing it from this thread.

LOL! it was a serious question. I have been thinking that all the back slapping (not back stabbing) for word puzzles belonged there. Since such a small percentage of total membership play these puzzles it would free up the Salty Dog for more topical discussion. Just a thought.

What do you mean small percentage of membership plays the word puzzles? I don't have statistics and I don't even know if statistics exist, but if I had to guess, I would guess that more people sign on to do the word puzzle every day than any other activity. Just a few of us comment on them.

Pat, I decided to check out the numbers. I suppose you could say Felix is technically right that it’s a “small percentage of total membership”—so far this month only 2.5% (1,584 out of 63,844) of the Sploofus “members” have played a WP.

But, of course, that isn’t a fair assessment of the popularity of the WPs. First, most of those 63,844 members aren’t active currently. The TQOTD leaderboard shows only about 15,000 folks have tried even one question so far this month.

Second, most of those that are active don’t participate on the Salty Dog or any of the Sploofus chat forums. I didn’t have time to look through every Salty Dog thread, but I did look at the most popular threads over the last few days. Just looking at political AND “feel-good” threads (e.g., best wishes for Smoke), but NOT the WP threads, I counted only 59 folks who have posted to the Salty Dog in the last few days.

So how many of those 59 Salty Dog posters have at least 15,000 points (about 3 games) on this month’s leaderboard? 45. That means that 76.3% of the Salty Dog users are interested, at least to some extent, in the WPs. (The percentage would be higher if I also included those folks who only post to the WP threads in the Salty Dog.)

Felix, that’s not a small percentage. You are outnumbered at least 3 to 1.

Perhaps Felix was just making an attempt to get the other forums used-don't know as do not speak for him. Long ago in another life here, I got the title of 'Thread Police' for trying to get people to ask questions in "Ask the Audience'"etc. Everything that people want to be noticed is on SD-came to the conclusion it was the way it was, the way it is, and the way it shall always be

I just know that I went Gold originally totally because of the Word Puzzles. I think that they are the single best thing about Sploofus, and I see nothing wrong with telling authors that I loved their puzzles. I don't do that often, but I sure do mean it when I do.

Daveguth
I have often voiced my opinion about the grossly inflated membership numbers. I even produced facts and statistics, only to either be ignored or vilified. Hell, my manhood and sanity were called into question. So the numbers are there for anyone who has the time, patience, and pluck to decipher them. I have renewed my platinum membership to support this site but there is nowhere close to 63 k. I would be surprised if there were more than one thousand paying members.

As much as I like to cause trouble, this was not an attempt at such. If 'The Hit List' is for acknowledging note worthy quizzes or puzzles then it just seems that is where those threads belong. This is not an effort to slight either authors or players. I guess the best we can hope for is to include 'WP" in the thread title so those not interested can by pass that particular thread. Have a great day. I think the purpose of the different forums was to make it easier to view by sorting threads with related elements. Have a Super Fantastic Day!

Felix, you make a good point that folks should be directed to the appropriate forum. I'd personally enjoy it because I wouldn't have to wade through all the political bickering to find something related to the purpose of this site: trivia games and puzzles. And if you take the titles literally, Salty Dog should be for folks that just want to irritate it each other, and The Hit List would be a reasonable location name for folks interested in the games. If somehow you can convince everybody to follow this idea, I'd love it. However, as Linda states, it just doesn't seem to work that way.

But, to tell you the truth, Felix, my response had nothing to do with the intent of your message. You stated something that wasn't true, and I simply provided information that confirmed it wasn't true. No big deal. But I would suggest you no longer use that incorrect assumption as you argue for separating the game posts from the political bickering free-for-all.

And, Spacecat, I wasn't really trying to make a point about paying versus non-paying customers--especially since non-paying customers are excluded from both the Salty Dog and the daily use of the WPs. However, I want to give you some kudos here. To get an estimate of the number of paying customers, I scrolled through the first 1000 users. Of those, 16 were gold or platinum. Applying that percentage to the whole 63,000 gets you almost exactly 1000 users! Your guess appears to be right on!

2.5 % is not a small amount? I am unsure of what fact I got wrong? It was only an idea.

Dave, it is a futile battle-believe it was over that the second time I quit. People pretty much refuse to post anywhere but SD-over it now and just do likewise

Dave, I'll take your word for it. I am horrid at numbers. But thank you so much for taking the time and knowing how to crunch the numbers to come up with an answer.

A Word Puzzle is dead after 12 hours. So your (hypothetical) post of how great the puzzle is won't likely get anyone to take it who wouldn't have anyway. Plus, nonpaying members may be physically unable anyhow, since they've used their WP for the week.

Thus, a post in praise of a WP serves as feedback to the author, which if an editor can't be provided by PM means. Also, it allows you to share "war stories" with fellow Sploofusers, which you can't do with quizzes, since they are still live an your post would probably involve spoilers.

Even if they look similar, comparing WP comments and hit list recommendations is like apples to oranges.

Then maybe just a forum called "I'm a Player and an Editor Ain't I Something" would work as well.

i quit doing WP 2 yrs ago when an editor sent me a private message saying while i was not being accused of cheating, they were suspicious because David got top scores when he took the puzzles after i had completed them. i was rarely in the top 25, but i enjoyed doing them. i was not sharing answers with him and their "suspicion" really upset me. i will not do them anymore.

OK, I'll pay your game, Felix. You're right--for what it's worth, 2.5% is a small percentage. (We'll ignore the arguments that suggest it's a meaningless percentage.)

But do you know how many Salty Dog posters don't play the WPs? About 15. Do you know what percentage that is of the total "Sploofus membership"?

0.02%.

No, not 2%.

2/100 of one percent.

Felix, now you think that not only everyone who gets EAs on quizzes is an editor, but also everyone who writes WPs is an editor? Man, this site must have at least 75 editors! Lucky site.
