A GREAT SHOW AND A FUNNY JOKE

I went to see Anna Deveare Smith in a one woman show last night called let me down easy -- don't mss it if it transfer to Broadway or if she brings it round the country. Very moving; a series of interviews she has done on health and ill-health. She plays the part of the interviewee in each case.

This is the joke -- and it works better spoken than written so imagine reading the lines out loud:

George Burns is performing his last live show... he is in his 90s, relaxing in his dressing room.
There comes a knock at the door; the prettiest of the dancing girls is there, wearing not very much.

Mr Burns, is it your birthday today?
Maybe....
I've come to offer you supersex!
I'll take the soup.

Nice.

When my nephew was a little kid, the waitress asked if he would like their soup or salad and he said "Yes I would!"

Segue, if you don't mind, to one of my all time favorite stories. I was lucky enough to see Jack Benny live about 40-45 years ago. He was telling various (true) stories about the days when George Burns and he roomed together--the real-life version of Sunshine Boys. One day, George was in the bathroom when a fairly substantial L.A. earthquake struck. George immediately ran out of the bathroom, with his pants still around his ankles, yelling to Jack, "Now I know I have to change my diet!"

When Rodney Dangerfield was going in for heart (I think...) surgery, a reporter asked him how long he thought he'd be in the hospital. RD replied something along the lines of, "If all goes well, a week or two. If not...eh, 45 minutes."
