ENOUGH OF THE UNIMPORTANT STUFF

So, who's going to win the World Cup? I know it won't be Togo or Iran.

Sorry..haven't been following due to Stanley and his (almost) return to Canada. Now let'e see, my crystal ball is a little hazy but I see that Canada sent cheerleaders, so they are out of the running...and the US, well...that is just a pipedream. I will place a fiver on one of the S.American teams. Goooooo Brasilia!

Being an expat Scot, living in England, brought up in Australia, married to an English woman. Who will I support? Why Argentina of course, they are playing the best football. I would love to see the Aussies thrash Croatia! Come on Aus!

Yeh - I just mentioned on another post that, through friends, etc., I'm currently supporting Oz, USA, Netherlands as well as England for myself. Sooner or later I'm going to have to take sides!

Just like England from '62 to '82 - hosts (cheats) in '66, holders (ahem!) in '70, failed to qualify in '74 and '78 - so basically they didn't actually qualify from 1962 to 1982 - 20 years!!!!

Ectually, Old Chap, we won it in '66, and I was watching.
But if you have to go back that far to scrabble together some dubious statistics, shame on you!
Now let's have Scootland's statistics then .........

I think you'll find that England - as host nation in '66 played all their games at their "home stadium", Wembley - the only host side ever to do so - a bit of an advantage perhaps - three "goals" in hte final that should not have stood, to wit:

Geoff Hurst's "first" (19 mins) a direct free kick - the ref had not signalled for the kick to be taken, and consequently Moore's cross and Hurst's header should have been disallowed and the kick re-taken - no goal.

Extra time - I think that we can all agree that the ball never crossed the line for Hurst's "2nd"- no goal

Extra Time (which wasn't necessary as W. Germany had won 2-1) as Wolstenholme so succinctly puts it "there's some people on the pitch...." under the rules of Association Football the game should be stopped in these cicumstances, therefore Hurst's "3rd" no goal.

W. Germany win 2-1

Scotland qualified for five World Cups in a row 74,78,82,86 & 90 (through qualifiers) I think that this year England might have made three.

Need I say too much more?

I've noticed that I'm the only person from the US taking part in this thread. Well, somebody is going ot hit a home run and clear the bases at the cup, now that the heavily favored United States has struck out on a high fastball.

Scotland won't do it. England must actually win a game or so to advance. Argentina looked bored in the last match. It it Brazil again? Mighty Switzerland? Those Germans are rather Teutonicly efficient so far and they take on Sweden next.

At least we're not talking about cricket...

Why are there so many "cups" in sports? Stanley Cup...Davis Cup...World Cup...

Do you think it all started with the athletic cup?

If you can get 20-1 in the bookies then go for it I'd make it slightly in Germany's favour 13-2 with Argentina at about 15-2 to win........

It's cooler!
Can't be too early for you - it's not until 4 p.m. BST?
Unfortunately it's another heatwave in Germany - why does England always get the 30C matches against 'hot' countries!!
Sorry - meant 3-4-2-1 - the Surreyman Secret System for the line-up that will give us 9-0 by half time!

The game's 8 a.m. out here on the Pacific coast. Way too early for something happening during summer vacation since I stay up far too late these days.

I switch back and forth between our U. S. announcers who are quiet, dignified, analitical and a bit boring and the Spanish language channel from Mexico. Those folks get EXCITED. Sometimes I wonder if they will survive a goal.

Anyhow, good luck. 9-0 sounds good!

Sad to see the English team sidle quietly away in their own different directions from the Stansted tarmac. No reception, nowhere near the fans who turned up. Long range telescopic TV shots only.
I didn't even see Becks (who came out first and got straight into his car) or Sven going round thanking the squad.
Rooney, so unfairly individually blamed by Sven, might even have been on a different plane? I couldn't see him.
They, and the die-hard fans who were there, deserved far better than that.
A couple more wins and it would have been Trafalgar Square and knighthoods.
If we treat quarter-finalists like that, maybe we don't deserve 'em to try more next time?

Yes it was very low key from what I saw on telly. Question is will Ronaldo dare show up for pre season training at Man United. They say Rooney can box a bit!

There are rumours that Ronaldo doesn't dare face Rooney and is running off to Spain.
