POLITICAL/CONTROVERSIAL POSTS

It was suggested to me by a frienD not someone who hates me that political/CONTROVERSIAL posts be moved to Trivial Tangents. (KNOW IT IS NOT ALWAYS CLEAR WHAT WILL BE CONTROVERSIAL) I would be willing to do that as only a few of us actually start THE MAJORITY Othem. Geri, it would affect only you moving your WHAT/ WHO up to the SD as far as I can tell to get them out of the red zone. If something controversial is posted on SD and the spirit moves me will reply but it would be nice if we tried to censure/ group ourselves and then if people still get offendED their own fault. I have starerted a thread there on the EDUCATION CZAR

Linda - I really applaud that decision. I know it is important for you to have those political discussions, and I think it is great that you've found a home for them. Since I have such a limited amount of time that I can spend here, I personally prefer to spend it playing games. But the great thing about Sploofus is that we can each get what we want from the site. Party on!

A typist I am not but believe I made the suggestion to about the Who/What things being moved to SD as other than those been a long time since much of anything of consequence posted there, It is pretty clear that Justin is not going to set up anything and this is the best alternative I could come up with-actually Diva suggested it to me. She is my friend. Said it will only work as people who post are willing to do it.

Some people inflame by the very title of their threads. Anything political will always get contentious so this is the solution I offer. If you can figure out how to make people be nice when they talk about politics-sure that would be a better option but doubt it or you can make it happen. If you can, give it a go.

I have been guilty of getting emotional in my responses, but then I make myself step back. One, other players don't like it, two, I don't like it. Debate is healthy in a democracy, but respect is needed and I for one am going to try harder to convey that.

GREAT! Lets make this idea about moving controversial stuff to anotherr forum controversial. It was an IDEA but since no one is clearly in charge here it is just that. You can step back all you want to, but some people's nature is "in your face". Since I pretty much do not like much of anything this administation is doing and watch Fox News and post links from there that in itself is controversial. Like I said it was an idea to remove the things that many feel discussion of a all not totally from Sploofus but from the most popular forum Just an idea that most likely will not go far

Why?

Are the thread headers not clear enough for an adult?

There is only one message board here with the critical mass to survive anyway, they should be consolidating not splitting up.

Also, fluff like this should be moved to Trivial Tangents, this just moves the interesting threads down the page:

I have been reflecting on this. I've long been in favor of having a separate forum for political/controversial topics, and like Alice, I applaud Linda's efforts to try to move such topics to a different forum. I also appreciate Linda taking notice of the WTHAI threads and trying to be sensitive to players who enjoy them. The WTHAI threads have never been in Salty Dog since it's such an active forum, and the information would get buried. So, I think I'd prefer moving the current thread to the Island forum. I'll wait to do this, though, until other opinions are voiced. I hope everything will work out. Thanks again for trying to improve Sploofus!

I don't see what it would do for me. I don't click on either forum, I just look to see what's newly updated on the side. If they are all in tangents, I'll still see them if they are newly updated. Of course, I may be in the minority here.

"Are the thread headers not clear enough for an adult?".

I could of course say to that, "Judging by behavior, I wasn't under the impression that adults were discussing politics on this site."

Since a small discussion of "the problem" of heated political debate has begun, I'll throw in my two cents.

There is a problem with discussing poltics using the current format. The problem with fixing a social problem is that somebody is going to get "judged" as part of or perhaps the cause of the problem itself. (As in, why are the threads being moved, are we not adults (judgement on another person-thread mover is part of the problem). The threads are being moved because you aren't acting like one! (judgment on another person- participants are part of the problem). The judging just goes back and forth infinitely. Then things get heated and bizarre names are exchanged. Isn't the problem our inability to handle judgement very well?

I still think the solution discussed on another thread is better, moving it to a "working" group, but since those are probably not going to be fixed anytime soon.........guess this solution is better than nothing?

Linda, I am pleased with your suggestion. In fact, I shared this same thought with someone before I came to SD.

I applaud you for coming up with a solution to this situation.

I have SO enjoyed Salty Dog the past few days when there have not been political threads. I come to this site for fun, to relax and to learn. I don't want to talk about politics; I'm in the minority here, and I just don't want to get involved in the conversations, for the most part.

The other day I posted a thank you to those who came up with such creative ways to engage other players with puzzles, comics, personal interest subjects on Monday. There were 4 responses to my thread. I felt a little like you are feeling - maybe nobody cares.

I don't think this is censorship in any form. You're probably correct in that a separate thread will not be established. You'll still have to conform to the same guidelines as far as Justin's terms of use rules - respect, no threats, no name-calling, etc.

Trivial Tangents is probably the best place for the political threads to go. I hope everyone will cooperate and move their political discussions there, following your lead.

You rock, Linda. ( I just couldn't help myself - I had to use that pun! )

You guys are driving me nuts.

Does something compel you guys to have to click on every thread in a forum? If the title says "Obama" or whatever, and you can't control yourself on that topic -- DON'T CLICK ON IT.

I would guess I look at 10 percent of the threads on here. the ones that should be removed are the ones that have no audience, drive popular threats down the page, and spur no interesting discussion, like....oh, say "Player of the Day".

Don't open the political threads. It isn't like this is a debate in your living room and you are trying to sleep.

I don't get how that would help me Smaug. I want to talk politics, I just feel that I should be in control of who I have that conversation with. How would not clicking on a thread title help me solve my problem of wanting to discuss it without having to discuss it with any yahoo that comes along?

Smaug, don't be putting down Linda's daily posting of the Player of the Day. We've picked up some new people posting to SD from that. it's just as important as any other thread on here.

And yes, the pollitical posts on here DO make a difference in my opinion. A customer walked into my office a few years ago and whispered, "What's wrong with this place? I can SMELL the fear the minute I walk in the building." He was 100% on the money - everyone was terrified every minute of the workday.

Whether I read the political posts or not, when they become embittered and spiteful, it "flavors" the whole Salty Dog forum.

What I'm curious about is why are YOU so dead set against posting in another forum? It's just as easy to click on Trivial Tangents as it is Salty Dog.

I have no control over anything here, Smaug. Some people believe the Player of the Day is a nice feature-I do thus i post it. Don't play many of the puzzles and find the picking them to pieces somewhat boring but many like that too. Also the points and leader boards here have never mattered to me most likely because I am too slow inaccurate to amass Your breaking into the top 100 is not high on my importantance scale but realize it is to you and others and try to applaud people for their achievements The political posts have caused much contention here and was only trying to get them off the most popular forum. I know you know much about chat boards ad I do not. Since I am not in charge of anything do whatever you want and so will I

Salty dog (slang), a slang phrase with several meanings, including "an experienced sailor" and "a libidinous man".

I don't know why Justin called this thread Salty Dog, but it is the most viewed and captivating thread here.

But, I think we need to incorporate more sex and less politics according to its definition. Let's raise our blood pressure for more important things.

Maybe this usual S.D. topic can be renamed and will arouse more folks and expand its size of interest.

Regarding this solution and thread, as long as some people would like it I guess it would be alright with me, but the trivial tangents idea doesn't solve my problems at all. BTW, I did know the Kennedys were all in the same family, I just didn't know exactly how (cousin? brother? etc.) Still not sure as to how it's relevant......?

Right on. Whatever back to you Linda. This is why it doesn't matter what forum you post on. People feel they have an inherited right to, criticize, belittle, gang up on in general act the age of their children or grand children. That probably won't change with a different forum. The general attitude and friends and foes have already been established and I don't see it changing. I would like to pose a question that if you don't like the quizzes and puzzles and if you no longer enloy a trivia site, btw this is a trivia site why stay? I know for a fact that there are a myriad of political forums out there and like minded individuals as well.
