To all Australians and other fans of the national team of Australia. I really think the penalty call was not justified. It is an opinion of most people that I have spoken to today. I do not know if it helps, but I will be cheering for Ukraine in the quaterfinals.

I'm not sure of the rules. The Aussie was already prone in front of the Italian, who ran onto him - rather than the Aussie coming in and tripping him.
Whatever the rules say about that - is.

PS: You'll cheer for the English on Saturday too, I hope!

Last-gasp penalty breaks Australian hearts
Posted: Tuesday, June 27, 2006. 3:35am AEST

By Stuart Watt in Kaiserslautern

A penalty to substitute Francesco Totti with the last kick of the game saw Italy end Australia's World Cup dream in controversial circumstances with a 1-0 win in Kaiserslautern this morning.

Totti's penalty came after Lucas Neill was judged to have brought down Fabio Grosso in the final minute of stoppage time.

The decision sparked outrage among Socceroos fans after TV replays appeared to show Grosso tumbling over Neill's challenge with minimal contact from the Australian.

The players also hit out, with Tim Cahill saying he was "furious" over the decision.

It was a cruel way for the Australians to lose after they had dominated both possession and open play.

The sooner they bring in a video ref to review contentious decisions, the better! There is far too much cheating going on. The standard of refereeing is also apalling, it will soon become a non contact sport.

That is true in almost every sport - the refs are only human and they call it like they see it - and unfortunately their calls aren't always the right ones. I am wondering when Baseball and Basketball goes to "instant replay" - or don't have any refs or umpires at all just replay every play and see if it is good or bad.

Hey - it'll then be video Editors and I'll be out of a job!
