ANYBODY LEFT?

With the political threads heading over to Trivial Tangents, I'm wondering how many folks still look at the Salty Dog.

After my pet WP a few days ago, a couple of folks mentioned they would like to hear more about my pet and/or they'd like to see all of my puzzle answers. Even an editor encouraged me to write up a description of my pet. So I not only wrote up a nice long description of my dog, Annie, I included all of the quiz answers. Since my update to the thread appeared yesterday morning, there have been no new posts to it. That's not that big of a deal, but here's what's interesting--there have been only three views! I know one was Alvandy--he mentioned my dog in a separate PM. Apparently those folks interesting in my pet and/or full set of answers were either pretty busy yesterday or just not that interested.

Yes, I was a bit disappointed to get so little response after taking the time to put my lengthy update together. (It seemed like there were plenty of comments when previous Pet WP authors described their pets.) More importantly, however, I'm wondering how many of us are actually left on the Salty Dog after the recent political exodus. It seems kind of weird to write to an audience that isn't there. (A little experiment--I'll watch the views on this thread to see if the same lack of activity occurs today.)

Salty Dog is much calmer. Of course, some people don't enjoy calm......me, I'm very fond of it. I abhor wrangling because it usually breaks down and then the name calling starts. I enjoyed your puzzle very much. I have really liked all the pet puzzles. I am an animal lover for sure. Please don't get your feelings hurt because no one responded. Maybe everyone was in a blue funk yesterday. I hope you have a fabulous day!

I read your whole description of Annie to my wife. She thought it was very touching. I have not ventured over into Trivial Tangents. If a tree falls in the woods ..... that's another subject.
But in answer to your question Dave I am reading more in SD than ever and enjoying quite a bit more. Thanks for posting about your dog. I am sure most Sploofers enjoyed it as much as my wife and I.

I've done all the pet WPs so far and try to read the explanations. However, yesterday was so hectic I barely had time to do all the things that expire on schedule. I'm so glad to have the politics gone from SD. Seems a lot more user-friendly now. I thinks we lost several readers during the recent Sploofus breakdown, and that happened about the same time as the migration to tangents.

We're all out here but sometimes life gets in the way of Sploofus!

I caught on to your theme by the 2nd puzzle but I had a couple of the tougher ones (at least to me) which ate up a lot of letters.

I thoroughly enjoyed it - even if I didn't get around to saying so yesterday.

Sorry Dave, I have been reading Salty Dog, but I haven't been doing WPs and I mistook your post as WP-related.

I'll check it out, I love dog stories!.

48 views in just over two hours! 8 responses to a non-controversial topic! Rumors of the Salty Dog's death are premature!

Thanks for the supportive comments. I guess yesterday was just one of those days where I caught a lot of folks focusing on "other important parts of their lives." It really wasn't a big deal, but only 3 views over a whole day did have me wondering. Now I know many of you had a chance to read about my lovely Annie, and, in general, are still checking in on the now-kinder and gentler Salty Dog.

Glad people are still around. I visited TT only once and then backed out real slowlike so no one would spot me! Soooo glad all that anger has left SD.

Hi Dabve: I'm having trouble with your name - must be my blurry left eye.
Your puzzle was beloved for sure.

As an aside, I've done two joint w.p's with Jank0614- we were billed as JANKAL'S blah blah blah

Then one contributor said our team name should delete the J & K.
It just struck me. Our puzzles must have been full of *#!)

Keep writing Dayve.

I also enjoyed your puzzle very much I always come to salty dog to congratulate the player of the day, also like the good feelings going on here i really hated all of the bickering, so i don't even go to tt, i usually don't comment a whole lot because i am usually busy with other things and don't have a lot of time to spend on the site. But may THE FORCE BE WITH US ALL ON SALTY DOG, and we can enjoy some calm. charlotte

There are lots of us left. Thank God, the crap has moved to TT, it astonishes me, still, how the same tired thing is said over and over and over, by the same few people. I used to just use the "latest" post feature, but that just reveals the latest snooze of political debate, so I have just been going straight to SD. It is refreshing to see people post things that are upbeat and hey, just stuff about life (like football (go STEELERS)(ok, I'm obsessed). I like when people keep the fun on this site!

I like that we can be frivolous and playful whenever we like, or, if we have an interest in attempting to discuss the events and issues of the day we can choose to do that too. I don't get why it needs to be segregated, but whatever makes you happy, I like posting to both.

It is great that the political discussions have been located in one place. Normally I passed them over in the Salty Dog but it wasn't always possible because many times the subject line didn't reflect content. Too bad a politics forum wasn't set up since there are a significant number of people that enjoy the discussions.

It's not dead, just different. Thanks Dave on your WP. I enjoy reading the backstory to these interesting puzzles. Keep up the good work everyone. I'm still trying to figure out how I'd come up with 10 pet names...

Well, I can't write WPs, but I could certainly come up with pet names. When we first moved into our rural home, someone dropped two hounds in our yard. Later someone "gave" us a pregnant cat (the gift that keeps on giving!). Between the kids' hamsters, chickens, pigs, and several rescued shelter dogs, we've never been completely pet-free. From a high point of over 30 animals (we ran out of names at one point and named a litter of cats "Eine, Swei, Drei, Fier, and Funf") to our current four (a grand-dog and three cats, all 'fixed.'), we've been rich in animals and otherwise dang near broke.

Both your quizzes and puzzles are superior, Dave. My score on any puzzle is never good and I don't always comment. I should. I used to take a write many quizzes and always appreciated gettng comments and tried to send positive ones to authors that I enjoyed. Your work is a real plus to Sploofus-Linda

I confess to not reading much of anything on any of the boards any longer because I find it too disheartening. I pretty much just do my WP, my TQOTD, and then I'm trying to take every music quiz in existence. If I see something that catches my eye, I'll open it, but it doesn't happen often.

Pepperdoc, there's a sneaky way to avoid a WP with ten different pets. I stole the idea from Slicko--just use one name ten different times!

This is just a reminder that if you decide to write a pet-themed WP using the format outlined in the original announcement, you can use a selection of any 10 pets' names you want. They do not have to be your pets. So far, we have had Garrybl's Cartoon Pets, for example, and Bigbird's Sesame Street Pets. Bbear and Haydn's word puzzle included the names of some of their own pets along with the names of friends' pets.

In addition, as Daveguth mentioned, you can write a variation on the original theme.

Dave, I'm SO sorry I didn't see your post yesterday because I was one of the ones that expressed interest in meeting Annie. I went straight for this thread as soon as I saw your name! When I wrote about my animals I started a new thread called Virtus' Real Pets because I wondered if people would look at the WP thread after it was no longer current. I am so glad the politics and petty bickerings of Sploofus have gone elsewhere. I tried to not open them if they were political, but many times it was unclear from the titles. I am enjoying getting to know the kinder, gentler Sploofusers.

I haven't been doing many WPs lately and missed yours. Saw this thread and then read about your beautiful Annie. Brought tears to my eyes. Lucky dog, lucky folks. Nothing like the love you feel for a dog and what you get back.

I missed your WP and also your original post about it, due to interference by Real Life, so I'm glad I got another chance to hear about Annie. I had a similar experience when my followup to my WP about all my past pets sank quickly off the charts without a comment. Sometimes the newer posts happen more quickly than others and things get buried quickly. Anyway, I've had two goldens, three if you count my daughter's, and they are such sweethearts. I know how you feel about your friend.

I got to do your WP, Dave but missed your post about it. Sorry I didn't get to see that. I enjoyed the puzzle and saw that your Annie had a special place in your life. How many of us feel that our dog is the smartest, handsomest (or most beautiful), sweetest pal on this earth? We all enjoy dog stories and listen to them with a big smile on our faces, at least I do. Thanks!

The Salty Dog posts are so much more interesting than Trivial Tangents.
I cant believe that everyone on SD is so nice --after the last 12 months......
We've isolated the political muck-spreading like small-pox and with any luck we can starve them of oxygen if we can mix our metaphors properly!

Let's don't get too self-righteous here. Many of us have been goaded into being pretty nasty at times in the past. It's just that some people like it nasty and some don't. So, let them stay over there where they like it, and we can do the same.
