WTHAI TALK -- NOV. & DEC. 2009

Hello to everyone who enjoys the WTHAIs!

After talking to fellow players, this forum seemed like the best place for these threads. Here's a link to the thread for Aug., Sept. & Oct. http://www.sploofus.com/bbs_detail.sp?post=171251&cID=6

I'll try to provide further links later for anyone who wants to skim past threads.

Congratulations to all the winners for October! Happy Halloween, and happy hunting!

Thanks Marilyn and Pepper!

Congratulations to Larry and Jo for solving the first WTHAI puzzles of November! Larry solved Connie Mack and Jo the Isandlwana WhereTHAI.

Congratulations also to Jo for her double win today, solving a Who and a Where! Woo hoo!

Ah, the elusive double.

I'll be content with my cemetery nuns for awhile; seems ages since I last solved one. I seem to have a knack - bring on the hooded statues.

LOL, Pepper!

Thanks, Marilyn, for providing the link to the image used for Schloss Vollrads! I clicked on the Wikimedia Commons link at the bottom of the page for the Schloss, which took me to this page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Schloss_Vollrads

Note the photo on the far left -- It's captioned "Oysters on the run." Somehow, with all the mollusks that appear in WRs and WMs, this seemed fitting. That puzzle sure was a tough nut to crack. Or maybe a tough oyster to crack?

Anyway, congratulations to Kate for solving it after 3 clues (were there more?) and 311 incorrect guesses!

And then we got another Where THAI stumper -- Ascham School Australia. That was finally solved after 2 clues and 149 guesses.

We've also had three WhoTHAI stumpers recently -- Sylvia Earle, Kenny Kramer and Elisabeth Rethberg.

Congratulations to all the winners so far, and happy hunting!

Wow, Larry is on a roll -- congratulations and way to go! Larry solved two consecutive WhereTHAIs recently, and just after midnight, he scored a double, solving both the Who and the Where!

If you missed the Bernie Taupin WTHAI, here's a link that shows what the puzzle looked like:

Kudos to everyone and have fun searching!

What are the odds, I thought, of seeing a "who" that you've met before? It happened with Nolan Ryan, and now with Anousheh Ansari, whom I met a month ago at a conference. Couldn't believe I recognized her immediately when I logged in this morning.

Thanks, Marilyn, for providing the link! That gives me the following idea -- If you solve a puzzle, and the Sploofus link doesn't take you to a page showing what we saw in the puzzle, but you've found a source image -- please post a link to the source image. Easy as pie!

Anyway, congratulations Marilyn, on solving that stumper! I'm sure we've all heard that mantra, "Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better," but I didn't know who came up with it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Texas_at_Austin

The University of Texas at Austin main building (and library.) Since I'm a graduate, I would be booted from the alumni rolls if I didn't get that one. The tower lights up in orange to commemorate significant events for the university. And sometimes lights are turned on on different floors of the tower.

Sadly, the tower is also famous as the sniper's perch where Charles Whitman shot at people walking around campus 40 years ago. The tower observation deck was closed for a time, but it's open now.

On Jacob Arabo, the picture isn't listed in Wikipedia. I recognized him from a news story about him. By Googling I found the picture on this link the 11th picture which I think may be the one in the grid. When you click on the picture I found no more info.

http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&q=Jacob+Arabo&sa=N&start=220&ndsp=20

The 11th picture on the page.

Thank you, Larry, for posting that link!

Well, I've really been asleep at the wheel lately! Sorry about that. Please join me in giving Larry a round of applause for three consecutive WhereTHAI wins and five out of the last 10! Way to go and woo hoo! And Jo also solved two WhereTHAIs in a row recently. Woo hoo to you, too!

Do we have any new WTHAI winners? Solving that first one is so memorable. I had such difficulty with these puzzles, and then finally solved Arthur Frommer. After that, I managed to solve a few more WhoTHAIs, probably all writers, LOL.

What was the first WTHAI that you solved?

And finally, congratulations to all recent winners!

Editors, would you please give NE1410s credit for the Medinah Country Club "Where"?

I've been watching this all morning and knew that he had the right place but without the "h" on the end. He finally put in the right Medinah but put in golf club. I sent him a PM, and he said he had run out of guesses, so he couldn't put in the correct name combination.

Thanks!

Will Loveanimals also get credit for Ilya Muromets? It looks like they spelled it the way it's spelled in Wikipedia?

Iliya Muromets Dabomb619
Saint Ilya Muromets Dabomb619
Saint llya Muromets Loveanimals
Saint llya Muromets Loveanimals

Saint IIiya Muromets Ki... Loveanimals

(could be something tricky going on with the "i" and "L")

We apologize for the malfunctioning link. Thank you for posting one that works, Larry.

Fortunately, it appears that the problem was confined to Internet Explorer. The link and others like it have been tested using various major browsers on Windows XP, 7 and 98SE. We believe we have discovered the source of the problem so that it won't happen again. If you do run into broken links in the future, please let us know. Thank you!

Congratulations to Larry on his double WTHAI win today, solving Slabsides New York and Jean Ping! Way to go! Although I haven't created WTHAI leaderboards this year, I'm sure Larry would have ranked at or near the top.

Congratulations also to all of our new WTHAI winners and to all players who enjoy the game! I don't have time to play anymore, but I still enjoy reading about the people and places. I also enjoy looking at the few tiles uncovered and wondering, "How'd they solve that?"

Happy New Year! I'll start a new WTHAI thread soon.
