It was not at all what I expected but I found it to be fun and educational. Good job!

Thank you. Besides Spain so far we have visited England, Italy and Australia. We do hope to venture to more countries and continents in the coming months.

Very fine puzzle despite the spelling variation which made one phrase extra hard. Thank you.

And of course, so far we've all been Smoked.

I did the phrase with a spelling warning -- and never spotted an oddity!
Must be my poor spelling!

Most enjoyable format.

Very poor spelling, Barry.

You must know one of the most obscure languages on the planet. Only a million people speak it.

(other than you, that is

BTW I knew you were absolutely brilliant, but now I have even more respect.

I dodged the spelling one this time. I did get the Taj Mahal one with the warning yesterday, but couldn't see anything that had a variant spelling I (or Wiki) knew of. This one was straightforward enough, got a pretty easy one first, then just a matter of figuring out the puzzle word from the clue.

Very fun.

what was the odd spelling? (I got the taj mahal one earlier and did NOT see that problem)

Does Hebrew count as an odd language?
Surely not Classical Greek.....

I also got the Taj Mahal phrase in yesterday morning's WP. It was:

a mausoleum called the taj mahal was built for the emperors favorite wife

I assumed the spelling alert had to do with the word "favorite" and was aimed at any international players who might spell it as "favourite."

Oh, duh. That must be it, Geri. I just thought the rule was American spelling UNLESS there's a warning, didn't even consider favourite, I was leery of it being Taj Majal or something.

Barry, please, no Classical Greek - the c/k thing will have (sp) in every clue.

The spelling variation in the Spain puzzle was the puzzle about Bilbo Baggins. I was more familiar with the town as Bilbao however the Basque spelling is Bilbo. It was subtle but I thought the caution was warranted.

Boy you are absolutely right sploofanini.
That would indeed have caught me out too.
I was confusing my Taj warning with that one.

Had had the Bilbo Baggins one, too, and once I knew it was Lord of the Rings, didn't realize there was a spelling variation.
