Fun one, but please explain. TItle made no sense. Good clues, though

I thought it was GREAT! Very clever...wasn't the clue a word or two in the puzzle? (It's over now, I think I can say that?)

Thanks! I enjoyed this puzzle very much.

I'm with Bbear on this one, fun puzzle and I really enjoyed it, but still can't figure out the title. Thought it was going to be about Christmas dinner leftovers!!

The title didn't click much for me either but the clues turned out very helpful. I figured out a [clever] pattern.
By the second puzzle, I was in gear.

ear to ear

EARth rotates three hundred..................... times per yEAR.

ho ho ho- HOtel--- HOtel-- HOspital; were key words

That was fun. Nice job.

I'm pretty sure that each puzzle was one that didn't make in a previously published WP. The clue for each puzzle we received today was the original WP's title. Ear to Ear, if I remember right, was the name of a previously published WP, so today's puzzle with that clue was probably the 11th favorite of the author. Today's "leftovers" were just the puzzles that didn't make the original cut.

Right, Dave. That's a tradition I first noticed on "Jeopardy!" when they would have a category called "Leftovers" with questions that were not asked on previous shows because the players ran out of time. Similarly, I wrote a "Leftovers" quiz a while back.

Dave and Ken are right on target. The clues all were puzzles that appeared throughout this past year, but today's were ones that were "close but no cigar". So you got stuck with all the refuse at the end of the year. I hope no one minded. There looked to be some outstanding scores posted.
