I am sure most of you have heard about the devastation in Haiti from the earthquake. It's all over the news, especially here as we have a large population of Haitians and even a section of Miami called Little Haiti.

If you would like to help, you can text 90999 to Haiti and a $10 donation will be on your phone bill.

How monumentally awful!

In the coming days we'll find many ways to help. Thank you, Diva, for posting a fine and endorsed way to do it. This one seems to be "safe" and aboveboard. We must all be careful to help in a secure way -- and Haiti definitely needs our help! Please be careful, everyone, of donating to less than reputable organizations. In crisis, our dollars need to be well spent and go to those who need it most. Heartbreaking!

I actually chose to view some of the photographs and videos of this horrendous and devasting act of nature...the human suffering is beyond comprehension. I will most likely not sleep well tonight, if not longer...unbelievably tragic.

Diva, do you know where that money goes? Is it the Red Cross or a similarly trusted group?

I just made a donation to Doctors without Borders ( An excellent group, and they were already on the ground when the quake hit.

Smoke just informed me that the texting donation Diva mentioned goes through the State Dept. to the Red Cross. So it's all good I'm getting way too cynical!

Yes Asor that $$$ goes to the Red Cross. Just to be clear-you text to: 90999 and then text Haiti for a ten dollar donation

Wyclef Jean is also coordinating efforts, and you can view his info here:

His text donations are $5, with all the money going to Haiti.

I'm watching the local news, and there are currently NINE planes circling Haiti, unable to land. It's total choas.

If you want to see local stories (from Miami):

I had my CPA take a certified bank check directly to the Red Cross so that the money is available faster.
I believe anyone wishing to make donations can take them to your local Red Cross, like my CPA did.
They accepted the check so I don't see any reason that they wouldn't in other local units.
