TRULY TRIVIAL STATISTICS

On January 30 2009 I printed out the all-time leader table from Sploofus. Don’t ask me why!
Now one year later I thought I’d summarize what happened at the top of the table – just in case anyone but me is interested in statistics.

Remarkably Weyoun came from nowhere to lead the table now; if ever there was a reason to save wager tokens this is it! I don’t know what his level was at the start of the year but we all know he averaged 90% or so during the year.

Here are the current levels and an indication of how many levels and points (in billions) they went up in 365 days. Divide that increase by 365 to work out their percentage on TQOTD and how many wagers they got right.

Increased Level Billions+ Position (- = drop)

Larrybus 29 30 -1
Banomet 25 32 -1
Garrybl 29.5 36 +3
Rnmorg 26 27 -2
Fookie 30 35 =
Sharper 28.5 28 -2
Linenlady 23 29 +1
Philkon 25 10 -5
Kauffman 28.5 27 +2
Slicko 33.5 44 +?40?
Jchristo 30 32 +7
Missashlee 26 26 =
Keebydog 23 15 -6
Bigbird 24 28 -1
Kravfighter 21 16 -6
Bunnythefoo 25 28 +2
Jeannarie 25.5 24 -1
Luvnmexsun 25.5 27.5 +7
Margiematt 18 32.5 +13
Sleestak3 24 25 -1
Maurlin 19 22 -8
Mdmal04 27.5 25 =
Tabby ?? ?? ??
Illiniamy 26 24 -1

Obviously these numbers don’t mean a lot; people may have stopped playing or been ill/away and missed questions. But everybody had five wager tokens, I assume so the numbers are roughly on a par. The real unknown is wager tokens in the bank as at beginning of the period.
What the numbers DO prove is that if you keep playing you won’t go down many positions no matter what happens, if you wager competently.

Weyoun was not on the list last year (that is what 100+ wager tokens do for you if properly expended)
Slicko is the other big winner with margiematt. jchristo up from 18 to 11; and tabby was not in the top 50 last march – name change or a lot of spare wager tokens?

Birthdays? there has been some griping that some people were missed.

I don't have much to distinguish myself on Sploofus (86th) but I did notice that only two people ahead of me have lower levels.

Here's my trivial little statistic - dunno if it's impressive, but I like it.

I'm currently #96 at level 34.7. The next person at a lower level is #171.

And some more: the top 50 repositioned in terms of longevity in Sploofus. Points scoring positions are in brackets again. Yet again, Gary (+32) and Barry (+30) have the best showing for points placing higher than time placing!

Hey, Achad, these two new lists make it look like I dropped in the standings!

I started a thread several months ago where I commented that points per level is not a fair indicator of Sploofus prowess. The higher your level, the better you're doing (answering your daily questions), so statistics like that are misleading.

So, Achad, your second analysis makes the most sense--how well are folks accumulating points (or even levels) based on their length of time on Sploofus. I put together a top ten back then, and if I get a chance today, I'll try to reorder the top 50 (maybe 100 so Smoke can be included) in order of points per days on Sploofus.

One other factor to take into account is that your total points (and in a sense your level points) are affected by how well you wager not just how many TQOTDs you answer.
(Because a dumb wager loses you part of a level on occasions -- as we all found out the hard way I'm sure)
In his spectacular run Weyoun deserves special credit for wagering his 100 wagers every day not just waiting for his category to come along. I'm sure I'm not alone in not having the guts to do that; vocabulary is the only category I'll go out on a limb for.

Barry, you're absolutely right that not all numbers are created equal in these analyses. Weyoun's amazing run can't really be reflected in any statistic culled from Sploofus.

But that doesn't stop me! As promised earlier, I'll start with the top 50 for average points scored per day. This is just total number of points divided by number of days as a Sploofus member.

1. Weyoun 79,687,797
2. Garrybl 73,915,797
3. Daveguth 70,222,514
4. Larrybus 67,673,786

49. Johnbtv 34,135,571
50. Siouxsie 32,784,919

Total Sploofus points are a result of four things: 1) Your ability to answer as many questions of the day as possible, 2) your ability to answer, in particular, your wager token questions, 3) your willingness to take a risk and bet your maximum, and 4) whether you're gold or platinum so you even have the ability to use your wager token. Because of the last item (your membership), this list is obviously biased against our non-paying friends. It's interesting what happens when you include them by looking at levels gained per day. I'll publish that table tomorrow, but you might be surprised. I also have some other interesting numbers I came up with.

OK, now I'll look at levels per year (it's a little easier to read and understand than levels per day). I prefer levels over points because points are biased towards paying customers who are particularly brave (and good) in a single category. Also, points are easier to accumulate after your first year, so even points per day is biased towards the long termers.

So, besides the top 100 on the overall leaderboard, I searched through the site for 100 more users who were particularly adept at answering their questions of the day. I mainly found these folks on the monthly TQOTD leaderboards. (By the way, there's a bug in the TQOTD leaderboard archives--some months appear twice while other months don't appear at all. I'm sure Justin will jump right on that bug.) I undoubtedly missed a few folks since I was just sort of fishing around. Let me know if I missed you or someone you know that scores real well on their TQOTDs.

So, here it is--top 50 on average Sploofus levels gained per year:

1. Dabomb619 32.4
2. Juliannars 31.3
3. Jcristo 31.1
4. Slicko 30.9
5. Weyoun 30.9
6. Susyq 30.6
7. Ggossage 30.3
8. Mrkelley23 30.2
9. Daveguth 30.1
10. Tabby 29.7
11. Missoblivious 29.7
12. Ritterskoop 29.7
13. Davethequiz 29.5
14. Pjpjo 29.4
15. Gobobbygo 29.3
16. Scannon 29.2
17. Fosseb 29.1
18. Theconfessor 29.0
19. Anarchyinsk 28.9
20. Andrewjackson 28.9
21. Killertomato 28.9
22. Johnbtv 28.9
23. Larrybus 28.6
24. Kaufman 28.6
25. Heavytopspin 28.6
26. Vadame 28.6
27. Fookie 28.5
28. Jbillygirl 28.4
29. Gsabc 28.3

33. Jgiven22 27.8
34. Nsinuosblufyxn 27.8
35. Sharper 27.8
36. Garrybl 27.8
37. Mdmalo04 27.7
38. Nerd 27.7
39. Wriggers 27.7

43. 1000aire 27.5
44. Bunnythefoo 27.5
45. Rjbrown59 27.4
46. Smoke 27.4
47. Reptilicus 27.3
48. A2sportsguy 27.3
49. Rta91boy 27.3
50. Unclej 27.1

Quite a few names on this list that you don't see in the overall leaderboard. Just a reminder, I guess, that there are a lot of excellent Sploofus players that don't accumulate a lot of points simply because they don't pay and/or they just don't wager large amounts.

I'll have another installment of my data analysis for the 2 or 3 of you that are interested. I'll try to get to that tonight.

Hello,

I was wondering how Daveguth managed to compile these statistics given that the site updated everyday.
Well done to Smoke, what an achievement. How many times have you lost points on a wager token?

Cheers

Didb72, these stats were pulled mostly pulled together mostly Saturday, with a little bit on Sunday. There may have been some moving pieces (e.g., some folks answering their TQOTD on Sunday morning), but it's all pretty close.

Donna (Smoke),

Your position on the last chart (levels of year) probably wouldn't change much. It's a rate, rather than an accumulation of points. You probably moved up about 27.4 levels per year in your prior Sploofus life. Perhaps a little less, since I'm sure you've gotten smarter as you've aged.

(On the other hand, the break in service did hurt your standing on the "points per day" chart--you had to work through that first year of low wager bonus points again. As I previously mentioned, all "newcomers" have that handicap.)

Dave
