Does anyone else find the census' "Snapshot of America" commercials moronic?

No, I find them very informational since they explain how important it is to be counted.

ESPN America here in Europe doesn't show the senseless commercials you saw in the USA.

Census commercials are so important to air so that we're all informed, etc. These are treating the American people as though we are a bit ignorant. Letting us in on a "big secret"....seriously? They should have come up with a better theme, I'm finding them a bit tiresome also.

VERY insulting and moronic.

I thought the census was the law. The way they're wasting taxpayer money to advertise could easily lead one to think we have a choice in completing the census, so we must be sold on making the choice the government hopes we make.

You did. Didn't they ask your permission to use your money to make fun of you?

Minnesota Republican Michelle Bachmann was a bit paranoid about answering her census form. Many people don't return the forms.

It's a communist plot. Don't send it in, you'll wind up in a death camp the day you turn 60.

Here's the facts folks: census bureau estimates that it costs 85 mil for every 1 percent drop in the mail in rate. Also, the mail back has dropped for the last three censuses (censi?). The paid ads worked fairly well in they're upping them this year. People actually respond to ads --- duh. And ads HAVE to be aimed at people whose IQ is slightly below the average sploofusee, duh duh. End of rant. I haven't seen the ads BTW, but bet they are effective if they are annoying people!

I don't think those census ads would appeal to anyone. You have a hard time figuring out what the heck they are advertising until you are way too far into the commercial. By then I have muted it or gone to another channel.

I'll support that ads are necessary but I don't agree that they have to be "dumbed down" for people to get it.

It seems like someone tried to be funny and missed the mark.

I think my biggest complaint would be that the add wouldn't "reach" the people who are unlikely to respond to the census forms. Spending an increduble amount of money to advertise during the Super Bowl to reach an audience largely made up of middle class Americans seems wasteful. The viewers probably fit into the category of most likely to comply. Then to say the Census is a "Snapshot of America" makes me want to wear my tux that day cause I want to look good in the picture.

I do find the census commercials moronic. The one they played during the Super Bowl with Ed Begley Jr. et al was the stupidest thing I've seen. No matter how necessary commercials may be, do they really have to be dumb? No.

Think about the Super Bowl commercials. A recent study showed that 51% of people tuning in do so to see the commercials, not because they are sports fans. Most of the time, the commercials during the game are clever and funny, which is obviously what people like. The really good ones go on to represent the company for the upcoming year.

There's no reason to be stupid just to try to get people's attention.

... though a lot of the commercials during the game did exactly that.

True. This year's offerings were pathetic compared to the usual.

Ridiculous use of taxpayer money.
