John Kibler was a long time MLB baseball umpire and since I umpire high school baseball, anytime one passes I reflect on trying to be as good as they are. He was 81 and is best rememebered for pointing fair when a certain ground ball went through a certain first baseman's legs. I assume most people can fill in the details.

How odd that someone else took notice of the death of John Kibler!

Craig, I can see why, as a Red Sox fan, you'd maintain a memory of him from that fateful day in 1986.

But my memory is different. John Kibler used to drive my now departed dad crazy! Being an old time baseball fan (born in Chicago in 1914 and a Cubs fan from birth!), my dad rarely missed any sort of baseball game on TV. And, seeminly everytime Kibler umped behind home, the score was something like 1-0. My dad was absolutely sure that John Kibler was horribly biased towards pitchers, and, in general, a lousy excuse for an umpire. All I heard was "That dirty rotten Kibler!" and "That SOB Kibler!"

I sincerely hope that Mr. Kibler can now "Rest in Peace," but if he ended up in the same location as my Dad, I'm afraid that's impossible.
