REQUEST FOR INFO/SUGGESTIONS

It always bugs me a little when writers slavishly follow the pattern for titling their thrillers

'The A B', where B is a common noun, say Weekend. and A is an outlandish word 'Osterman'.

Going back in time through Robert Ludlum (The Bourne Conspiracy) perhaps to Tolstoy (The Kreuzer Sonata) via a detour to Janacek/Capek (the Makropoulos Affair).

Does anyone know earlier examples?

Should that count? Canterbury is a placename describing where the people were headed, and not a nonsense word?

I agree; nice try but no cigar.

I'm curious: Why do proper names of the books' characters -- Bourne, Osterman, Pickwick -- annoy you when used in the titles? How is it any different from *Rabbit Redux,* *Tess of the D'Urbervilles,* or ''The Da Vinci Code*? Or, for that matter, any of a zillion titles with place names (*The Salzburg Connection,* *The Moscow Rules,* etc.)?
