SURNAME GAME

List five given names of famous people with the same last name. The first correct answer starts it over with five more famous (or infamous ) real or fictional folk with at least 15 minutes of fame under their belt. They must all have the same spelling of their common last name. Begin:

Bob
Jane
Seymour
Jim
Walter

Just an FYI, I believe the famous Skinners were:

Bob Skinner--former Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder
Jane Skinner--Fox News anchor
Seymour Skinner--principal on The Simpsons
Jim Skinner--McDonald's CEO
Walter Sinner--X-Files character

OK, five more first names:

Tracy
Barbara
Michael
Neil
Eddie

Murray

Not Murray.

However, this shows a slight flaw in the game. With a little bit of Google/Wikipedia research, I was able to find five at least slightly famous Murrays with those first names. For example, Tracy Murray was a UCLA basketball player who played for awhile in the NBA and Barbara Murray is a British actress who appeared in such blockbusters as "Passport ot Pimlico" and "Meet Mr. Lucifer."

So good guess (and, in a way, correct), but I'm thinking of five names that are each reasonably famous.

Yep, Jordan is correct!

Tracy Jordan--Tracy Morgan's character on 30 Rock
Barbara Jordan--first black woman from a Southern state (Texas) to serve in the US House of Representatives
Michael Jordan--apparently played some basketball
Neil Jordan--movie director/writer who won Best Original Screenplay Oscar for The Crying Game
Eddie Jordan--current coach of the Philadelphia 76ers

OK, Barry, your turn!

daveguth
Daveguth  (Level: 254.1 - Posts: 1636)
Sun, 28th Feb '10 2:19 AM

I'm guessing these are the right answers:

William Morris--British writer and artist
Johnny Morris--BBC personality
Dick Morris--Fox news commentator and Harvey Feinstein soundalike
Desmond Morris--"Naked Ape" author
Garrett Morris--Mission Impossible tv show actor

Scrabq is right that a case can be made for Fitzgerald. As I said earlier, this appears to be a flaw with the game. I will note, however, that each of the Fitzgeralds (to my knowledge) has been dead for quite some time, no John Fitzgerald went by Johnny that I know of, and Garret Fitzgerald spelled his first name with only one "t". But hey, I'll give you my medal since I already have one.

And sorry, Barry, for jumping in when I already had a medal. I'll also stick to pm'ing.

But, I still a owe a new list of five:

Frank
Marion
Jim
Jack
Toni

Not the one Barry has it mind, but it looks like Davis could also work. (Probably true also for Smith, Johnson, Jones, etc.) This game is kind of odd in that there are potentially several right answers. I suggest guessers should just assume that these mystery last names aren't especially common (but common enough to find five relatively famous people), and also that a very obscure person will not be one of the names, e.g., Adam Davis, Australian rules football field umpire.

Robert Powell--British actor (Jesus of Nazareth)

Karen, this wasn't a shocker. I knew NONE of those people except for Ralph. Over here across the pond we can't even spell chricket. Now if you'd given us Ian (as Marat or Bill Hayden eg) ...it would have been another story.

Sorry, Annie! I tried to be fairly global and cover different age groups to give everyone a fair chance.

I thought Elliot might bring the name to mind for many of you in the USA:

“Elliot Lee Richardson (July 20, 1920 – December 31, 1999) was an American lawyer and politician who was a member of the cabinet of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. As U.S. Attorney General, he was a prominent figure in the Watergate Scandal, and resigned rather than refuse President Nixon's order to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox.
As of 2008, Richardson is the only individual to serve in four Cabinet-level positions within the United States government: Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare from 1970 to 1973, Secretary of Defense from January to May 1973, Attorney General from May 24 to October 1973, and Secretary of Commerce from 1976 to 1977.”

I also thought many of you were pretty keen on sport. Oh well! Back to the drawing board!

Congrats again to Daveguth! Over to you, Dave!

Hmm.
elliot Richardson was one of the first names I looked at and rejected it outright since none... (not one) of the others had I ever heard of. I think I even googled a couple and realized that they could not be right.

Howabout a check digit in each puzzle? For example when I did a set involving Billy Martin I thought of adding some aside like (once sued and had to pay damages of 10K).

Sorry, Barry but I just repeated your Google search as an experiment. Results as follows:

Neil - 1st result (BBC), 5th result (Youtube), 7th result Wiki
Owen - 3rd result (Wikipedia)
Luke - 2nd result (Wikipedia)
Kevin - 2nd result (Wikipedia)
Vic - 1st result (Wikipedia)
Jason - 2nd result (Wikipedia)

I used Wiki, however Google appears to make it even easier to check! I'm not quite sure how you realised this was impossible! But, hey it's only a game guys!

My answer was sent after Ken's, so I missed Headylamar's correct response--Morgan is right!

Ellen Morgan--Ellen Degeneres's character's name on the TV show "Ellen"
Frank Morgan--actor who played the Wizard of Oz
Harry Morgan--actor who played Colonel Potter on MASH
Joe Morgan--Baseball Hall of Famer
Peter Morgan--screenwriter for such movies as "The Queen" and "The Last King of Scotland"

Take it over Headylamar!
