I think this was one of my favorites this year. Perhaps because my wife peered over my shoulder when I was stuck and came through with a couple of words for me -saved me a bunch of guesses.

I feel your pain, Diane. Although this particular one didn't trip me up -- perhaps I've finally learned to take that safety "N" -- iirc, the usage was wrong. It should have been "can."

Once again, "may" is used to imply permission: "May I leave the room?" (i.e., is it permissible that I exit, or would that be rude?) "Can" implies ability or possibility: "Can I leave the room? (i.e, are my legs working? Is the door locked?). When in doubt, go with "can," and odds are that you'll be correct.
