JUST SAYIN.....

Kicking around ideas to solidify sploofus' future.

Anyone have any experience with clubs or the like setting up debentures?

The idea would be for sploofus to issue let's say $1000 dollar debentures paying 5% interest. Redeemable 20 years down the line.

I'm not sure of the legal traps -- but it might be a way for Justin to get some capital influx at below market interest rates while making the donors feel they weren't giving the money away.

Someone is going to have to explain that in terms that financial dopes like me can understand. Good to see people thinking ahead about how to keep Spllofus going thuough, Barry. On Facebook yesterday Justin floated an idea or two. Am anticipating future words from him.

The bottom line is that server costs go up when usage goes up. So anything that allows free access gets rapidly expensive. If we all went platinum it would be a start!

Add a "silver" level for the masses that are non paying.....making it below the gold and plat.......supposedly there are a bunch of free loaders....and I don't mean that in an ugly manner.......that would generate more $ also.

I'm not saying let's keep the free status...but I frequently go to a free status when I wait a little too long to pay my dues and have to wait for processing from paypal...hopefully he will keep that in mind and not give my account the boot when it does! Even if you wait until the "day of" it takes awhile to process....just pointing that out. Hopefully he reads this stuff.

I like Marsha's idea....

I'd have to know far, far more to give an opinion on Justin's revenue model, but Sploofus has a great base of members and an excellent model of self-generating content.

I'm sure he'll figure out the business answer. Just need to tweak the tiered access, I guess...

Has anyone said, or does anyone know - what period of time is covered by the $2500? Annually? Monthly?

Has he tried lowering the prices? I don't know if he's at the maximum marginal rate but it seems rather expensive.

Less than 60c a week seems cheap to me

I understand that it is $2500 a month.

As amatter of deliberate policy I dont have Facebook -- and I'm sure other members are in the same boat.
We would appreciate seeing some of the ideas from that site pasted here -- maybe someone could start a new thread.
I don't know if I speak for others but I would not feel pressurized by that and would not think of that as inappropriate fund raising.
Thanks

Barry

$2500 a month to host the Sploofus website? Maybe he could look for a better deal.

I hope not. Even a dedicated managed server can be found for well under $200/mo. If he's paying anywhere near $2500/mo. he's getting gypped big time.

I'd have to know exactly how much traffic he gets, but I have (unmanaged) virtual private servers which should handle the load of this website for less than $30/mo. It's active - but it's by far not the busiest site I've ever worked on.

Of course, it also depends on the quality of the code running the site.

Basically Barry, he was if I remember correctly saying he would give free members one month and then they would be limited to only doing the question of the day. As I understood him-trust me know nothing about servers nor overloads-but the site grew too fast and too many free members for his servers to accommodate. He also said that the editors would then have more time for paying members. Goddess and Stoutyoungladd and others were part of his discussion so please correct me where I misunderstood- highly likely

He also said that we would hear from him again today. That doesn't seem to be happening either.

Here's what he said Linda:

"Sploofus is DEFINITELY NOT down permanently! As Mitchy said, the data center switched us off and we will be back up as soon as I get the $2500 raised. After that time, I will be giving all non-paying members a "one time" one month free trial membership. After it expires, I will be placing major restrictions on what fre...e members can do on the site (i.e. TQOTD only). This will allow editors to focus solely on you paying members, reduce overhead costs, and free up the servers for paying members. It's something I should have done some time ago - I did not anticipate this. Sploofus is expensive to run... but as a company we will be much more stable after the site is brought back up and we focus solely on our paying members.".

Hope Justin doesn't mind a repeat of his words here about ways to make the site more financially stable.......

There are plenty of free trivia sites. If Justin does what the above says, I'm outta here. The recent flood of low quality quizzes makes leaving easier.

Has anyone checked memberships. Scrabq said there were 562 gold memberships and 160 platinum. Doesn't it seem unreasonable that 782 members are keeping this site afloat?

I think another membership level is necessary. If you join as a free member and like what you see , enjoy playing and would like to continue doing so then surely after one month of free play it would be reasonable to expect a person to pay their way.
Maybe Justin could have a silver level say at $9.95 for six months. $1.50 per month is hardly a lot of money and if over 60,000 players were to pay up Justin would have no problems with this site!

He later said the data base settled for half -. the rest to be paid later. He said he would never ask for handouts again and thos who contibuted via his corporate acount palpal@sploofus.com would be repaid. As soon as he reached the amount he needed to get the sire back up, he annouced he had it and any fundraising efforts were over. He never said to my memory the lenght of time anything covered either. It is probably best to wait to hear from him or him via the support team.

Vanya leaving makes no point-been there done that twice over things entirely different. As you can see I;m back. There are ways to fix the number of quizzes on most recent list. in 1.0 a person could only have one on at a time and if they wrote a flood of them, the bumped themselves off-did that too. Not sure what the ultimate solution might be but if Sploofus goes away it doesn't matter. Try the Tournaments for a bit until things get fixed as they are always top notch.

Eqitriv mentioned that I had made a count of Gold and Platinum members. I click around on the All-time Leaders last night, and this is what I have found.

Of the 75,006 members last night, 14,606 have merely signed up, taken between 1 and 5 quizzes and are still on Level 1. That means they have never taken a TQOTD. And most of them have only been on the site once. Their names are there, but they cannot be considered "traffic" since they have been inactive since they joined.

The first player who actually got a TQOTD right, that is, they got to Level 1.1 was the 33,990th player from the end. That means that nearly half of the members on here have done virtually nothing about their membership.

There's about 23,000 people who have actually played a few games or more. The people around 23,000 are at levels like 2 and 3. So they've got 10 or 20 TQOTDs right, again not star players, but they are enjoying Sploofus to some extent.

If we look at those 23,000 people, almost 700 people are paying members.

Something needs to be done to encourage more people to continue playing, to realise the benefits and fun they can get from Sploofus, to get them to try all the features of the site. It's sad that 34,000 people joined Sploofus and did not take away any fun. Maybe Justin needs to present new players with a Welcome Letter and a short Seminar on how to have fun. We Splooufers don't get a chance to encourage them, because they hit the site once and never again.
