While searching through births and deaths for the year and then finding three very prominent cutting edge artists who died (Kandinsky, Munch & Mondrian) and four prominent film directors who were born (Lucas, Weir, Parker, Demme), it seemed to me to be an interesting transition from the pre-WWII art scene to the post WWII media arts.

The Truly Trivial Event involved a bizarre incident in Chicago where a crowd of women trampled security guards and department store floor walkers to buy alarm clocks. As I looked into the event a little further, it made more sense. Most consumer products had gone out of production during 42-43, but when the okay was given to resume production on non-essentials, alarm clocks were one of the first things produced. And since millions of men and women were working at all hours of the day, and old alarm clocks were worn out or broken, they were the hot item necessary to avoid being late to work. So, on a day when the department store announced that they were getting in 1,500 clocks, 2,500 women showed up to buy them.

I wish that I had seen the word 'slightly' before reading that!

Thanks for posting these. The first point is particularly interesting. Lots to think about!
