As promised, I’ve pulled together some facts about the top 5000 Sploofusers on the “Level Leaderboard.” The top 5000 goes from A2sportguy at Level 155 to several players at Level 47. I don’t mean to slight those below Level 47, but 5000 seemed like a fairly big slice of the (presumably) active Sploofus players.

There isn’t a lot of information listed on this Leaderboard, but I was able to look at five topics I’ve been curious about:

1) Who has been around the longest? When did Sploofus start and how many initially joined?
2) How many folks are at level 100 or above? How about 50 and above? Any other interesting groupings?
3) What Sploofusers have moved the quickest up the Leaderboard?
4) What countries are folks from? Is this mostly a site of U.S. members, or is there a strong representation from other countries?
5) How many platinum and gold members are in the top 5000? How about the top 100?

Just so I’m not dumping too much information on you at one time, I’ve decided to split these topics into five separate posts. Some topics will likely gain more interest than others.

Let’s start with topic #1. I’ve always been curious who’s been around the longest. I have never seen any of this discussed before, so I’m just relying on the Leaderboard here. Some of you might have better anecdotal information.

Fairydust arrived about six weeks before everybody else on April 19, 2004. Then, 14 folks arrived from June 21 through the end of the month. (Surreyman was one of them.) Another 73 arrived in July. In all, 305 Sploofus members (who are still around now at level 47 or higher) joined in 2004. (No doubt there are several long-time members who have since terminated their membership, e.g., Tukzilla.)

Here’s the number of (Level 47 or above) players who joined in the subsequent years:

2005: 1329
2006: 2142
2007: 1125
2008: 99

The decrease from 2006 to 2007 (and especially 2008) does not imply a decrease in popularity. No doubt there are plenty of folks who joined in 2007 and 2008 who just haven’t reached Level 47 yet. It just suggests that the Sploofus long-time members started to arrive in big numbers in 2006.

OK, perhaps not the most revealing discussion, but it’s kind of a starting point for the posts that follow.

How about, for each person, dividing the number of levels by the number of months in action?
Then we'd see the high flyers, rather than the old duffers like myself who have just been plodding along for centuries.
On second thoughts, maybe don't show that!

Wow! I cannot even imagine how long all your stats took to amass. What a job, and very interesting. And I wonder how many of those early members are very active - and how many just do their TQOTD. Actually, in general, I wonder how many just do their daily question. I know that several friends I introduced to the site have never gone beyond the TQOTD and they've been members for years.

I'll be interested in the gold and plat members when applied to this. Especially in light of the discussion to encourage people to pay for membership.

Very interesting research...I've been here since September 17, 2004....I am really anxious to see the answers to the rest of your research...

Thanks to all who have had nice words. More to come, and I think more interesting. Should have another one posted this morning.

Surreyman, your idea is very close to what I did to address topic #3. Decided to go with levels per year. A very surprising champ.

Alice (Bigbird), you'd be surprised by how quickly I was able to put it together. Basically, I just copied data off 100 screens and pasted them into a speadsheet (about 30 minutes) and then cleaned things up a little bit (another 30 minutes). I'll probably spend more time writing up the results. (And finishing my daily WPs!)

I think, Alice, we'll have a good guess of how many folks are just TQOTD players by the time I'm done. That was the primary reason I started this little project--I was curious how many of these silent, non-paying members are out there.
