Hooray, here’s the last in this series! Congratulations for making it this far!

In this one, I’ll talk about paying memberships. I believe I’ve seen other posts provide the actual number of Gold and Platinum members across Sploofus, but this post will only look at the top 5000 on the Level Leaderboard. So everything that follows has to be put in the context of those Sploofusers who have stuck around the longest.

Of that group, 5.8% have a Gold membership and 2.1% have a Platinum membership. So about 8 percent of these Sploofusers have some sort of paying membership.

Those numbers change quite a bit when you look at the 244 folks who have reached Level 100. Of those 244, 14.8% have a Gold membership and 12.7% are Platinum. So more than a quarter of those folks have some sort of paying membership. Yet, this explains why so many folks at higher levels don’t appear on the All-Time Points Leaderboard—almost three-quarters of the 100+ crowd aren’t paying members, and can’t use wagers to climb the points ladder.

Out of curiosity, I thought I would look at the memberships of those 50 folks who have the highest Levels Earned per Year (that were listed in the third installment of this series). Of those 50, 34.0% were Gold and 16.0% were Platinum. So half of the fastest level earners were paying members. Yet, again, you can see why several of these folks don’t appear among the points leaders—half of these aces can’t use their wager tokens.

I decided to take a look at how long folks have been members of Sploofus. The average for the 5000 Level Leaders was 46.8 months—almost four years. When I looked at average length of membership for paying memberships, I found some differences. Gold members have been around an average of 45.4 months, while Platinum members have been around an average of 48.2 months. The average Gold member is at Level 75, while the average Platinum member is at Level 82. I’m guessing this just indicates that the longer you stay on Sploofus, the more you develop loyalty for the site.

One last bit of analysis for what’s it worth—I looked at memberships for the different countries. As a mentioned earlier, 8.0% of the 5000 Sploofusers have a paying membership. It’s not much different when you look at only the U.S. players—8.1%. Things change a bit when you look at the other countries. Our UK friends actually have a higher percentage of paying memberships—9.5%, but the other countries lag behind a bit. Canada is at 7.5%, Australia is at 4.8%, and the rest of the world is at 5.8%. Because this site is primarily geared towards U.S. citizens, it’s not surprising these other countries show lower numbers. What is impressive is the interest and loyalty of our British members!

Anyway, I believe I’ve now exhausted just about everything I can get out of this analysis. I hope at least some of it was interesting. Thanks for following along all the way to this point.

I think Justin has to chase up all the top non-gold members and make tem an offer they can't refuse?

NIce job, Dave. I think that answers the question about the business model.
Too bad some people have been here for four years and haven't gotten a paid membership. But it's very possible that the only thing they do is the question of the day.
I don't remember Justin's recent suggestion, but I think the 30-day trial and then $5 for six months to access TQOTD and quizzes would help foot the server bill. (At the end of 30 days, you're dropped from the database.) For $10/6 months, you get TQOTD, quizzes, 1 WP per week, 1 guess on the W/WTHAI and one play per hour on the WM/WR. The next level up would be gold and then plat.

Fascinating! Thanks for dredging through all that data.

I am really surprised that there are so few paying members among the either the longest tenured, or the highest scoring.
