What the heck is going on here:

Looks like all the people who join today get automatic Gold membership. Either we have a hacker or Justin has given newbie's a months trial at Gold level. Can anyone spread some light on this subject

Correction on last message. New members to Sploofus have been getting Gold membership since the 16th of April. Not a hacker but a new marketing policy. Nice to be told whats going on

Not just today. Every member who has joined since the middle of 4/16/10 (all 363 of the) has been a Gold Member.

Perhaps its a limited Gold, not seen much on SD or WR/WM

Thu, 22nd Apr '10 6:44 PM took me longer to count. Were you actually finally told about the new marketing policy, or are you guessing?

Just guessing Maurlin. If it was a hacker it would be just todays people who would get gold membership but because its all the people who joined since last Friday I presuming that its a way to encourage people to become gold members on a full time basis.

I think Justin mentioned something along these lines in a post awhile back. Hope it works & lots keep their paying memberships

Yes indeed! I implemented this just recently. All new players get a 2-week trial Gold membership... This will hopefully increase the conversion rate and get more people to upgrade! Once their trial membership expires it is my hope that the instant immersion into banner ads and relatively little functionality will do the trick

Well, given today's delightful post from one of these newbies, is it possible to given them a temporary Gold membership without Chat Forum privileges?

That worked with me way back, when I got to do WPs 2x daily for a week or two. It got me to sign up for gold and ultimately for plat.

Yes, I hope it works too and that the Forum realignment is right behind this as well as the ability to block people we don't want to see/hear. Progress is good-keep progressing.

great way to get folks addicted to the word puzzles by allowing them to play twice a day then yank it until they fork over money. Great marketing plan!

It's kind of like when HBO gives Basic Cable subscribers a free weekend to see what they're missing.

But a LOT cheaper.

Welcome to the community, new members! Hope you all enjoy it even half as much as so many of us "oldsters" do. Have fun!
