EASY ALGEBRA WP

I was really frightened by this title because I am math illiterate. I remember walk into my algebra class in high school and the teacher just standing there shaking his head. I just calmly looked at him and told him that my father MADE me take the class.
I passed by the skin of my teeth. If I can do this puzzle anyone can. Thanks for the memories and it was fun. BUT I'm certainly thankful that it was NOT "hard algebra"!

Finally...a puzzle just for me! I majored in Algebra in college, honest. Did it help? Ha ha. Gotta learn to type slower! Thanks, great fun. Ann

This was really fun. I managed to create an alternate universe and a second plausible solution for one puzzle (but no one to blame but myself for that -- could have wasted a go to check for sure). I really enjoyed finding the words to fit, and doing one with no letters at all was extremely satisfying.

Got by it by the skin of my teeth hated math of all kinds and never did take any kind of it that absolutely wasn't required, but still only missed two hundred points so i guess I actually passed this one. lol charlotte

Great puzzle. After seeing that Barry solved one with no letters, I was so determined that I spun my wheels for minutes at a time. Never did it. Nice job, Barry. Now watch, Slicko, Smoke, or someone will solve the thing in 5.

Hah! A fiver? What guts it would take to even try.
A fun puzzle and a nice brain exercise.

I scored well so I'll brag a little here. I have been blessed with good math skills so I'm pleased with my score. I was not great in algebra back in school eons ago but this puzzle is fairly easy if your math skills are solid.
The clues were fantastic too.

It would take more than guts to get these in 5 - it would take dumb luck as most of mine had more than one possibility with no letters, but I think I got the same one as Barry which was a very doable no letter puzzle. A great twist on the word puzzle idea. One of my favorite subjects in high school, too.

Well, OK, maybe not a 5. But a 10 still is very impressive! Nice one. Gary.

I got 1/100 for my ninth grade algebra paper: that was for spelling my name correctly

Math and I are NOT good friends.

Did anyone else get caught by one that read something like
'20 minus two x equals eight makes x six
/20 minus six x equals eight makes x two'?

Entirely my own fault of course but I was going for 10 -- which it turned out was necessary to catch slicko!!

I thought this would be a fun change for those among us who DO like math challenges, so I'm glad to hear that many of you enjoyed it (or at least didn't hate it!). I was so worried that some of my math would be wrong - I quadruple checked!

There were only two phrases that began with 'twenty':

twenty minus six x equals eight when x is two
twenty five minus two x equals seven if x is nine

I don't know how you got one with no letters Barry, but congratulations!

Next time I think I'll make them all have the exact same pattern

It took me 8 for my first one, another 8 for my last four, and a pink screen on an alternate word. Very good puzzle.

I feel sorry for anyone who did not have good math teachers. My seventh grade teacher would remind you of Andy Griffith, but he knew and loved math and his students. I teach math because of him. One of my college professors was brilliant but couldn't teach a fish to swim. I work with GED candidates to make up for him.

My toughest one was my first because none of my math letters -- E, I, T, N -- help get "squared." The others, thankfully, were a breeze in comparison. I really thought I was going to embarrass myself.

The one I got with no letters was the one with seventeen - there just wasn't anything else that fit that many letters so then I just worked backword - did have to do some scrawling on a sheet of paper to make sure.
